If it's £250k that's a fair price considering he's out of contract in the summer, I hope we can get this guy from Chesterfield now, he seems like a real prospect.

Has to be at least £250k surely. With Elder going I would be pissed off if we don't add another 2 new faces tomorrow.

If Hammond goes to Colchester how can he possibly say that he's going to a club with ambition? They will be League 1 with us next year (unless we put together a miracle promotion push) and what will he have actually achieved other than boosting his bank balance. Ah....

I'm sure we will give him a warm welcome back... as we push for the title next season :yahoo:

And of course none of us would ever do the same to increase our bank balance?

The onus was on the club, and DK in particular to have offered Dean a contract in the summer that he couldn't refuse. DK's failure to do that is the reason why Hammond is now going. You can't blame the player for wanting to play in the Championship and earn some decent money. Its a short career and he has to look after himself. We've messed up where he is concerned and I think it is a great shame.

I'm not sure if it's worth having this argument again, but I truly don't believe the club have done much wrong in Hammond's case. I think that with Hammond's status as captain, and importance to the squad, coupled to the fact that he has been our most consistent player over the last few seasons and is clearly highly regarded by many in football, the club would have offered him as much as was realistically possible to keep him. I simply won't believe that the club were half-hearted in their efforts to ensure he remained with us. If the offer wasn't good enough then fine, players have their own ambitions just as we as a club do, but I don't see why we have to blame DK.

Or perhaps we cannot afford what he wants ?

There's a non sequiteur in your argument there. It's a short career and he has to look after himself means that the only contract we could ever have offered him would have had the signing on fee he is now about to get.

I dont blame hammond for taking the option - I dont blame the club for this. It is a real no blame scenario. Whether the contract was offered in the summer or oct is neither here nor there, another 3 months wouldn't have changed his mind.

He is out of contract in the summer and can leave for nothing, I am assuming the club have gone to all reasonable lengths to keep him but he has declined to sign a contract extension, therefore offloading him in the transfer window makes business sense. It is sad that he is leaving but better that we receive some sort of fee, rather than see him go for nothing in the summer, plus his sale will help offset our recent additions.

So Hammond will be back in Div 1 next season then.

Still, Coilchester will be moving to a new stadium, some of you have already commented on just how small cheap & nasty it looks. Never mind, maybe he'll still get the chance to play at falmer, should Colchester keep up with us.

Surely you've noticed that players get big signing on fees and better wages when they transfer? Might have something to do with it don't you think? Or perhaps everything?

If Dick Knights gets 250k for him, then he's a f***ing genius. Virgo wasn't worth the 1.5mi Celtic paid for him, Harding wasn't worth shit, and Hammond out of contract in the summer is worth slightly more than Harding.

250k Hammond if he were under contract would be a good deal, but if he gets that now, I'd be in awe of the man. The only thing I would question, is why turn down £200,000? I'd have bitten their hands off.

Elder going won't be any loss. Hopefully a couple more will follow tomorrow, including someone to take over from that twat Kuipers, although I'd imgine Flinders will follow in Feb on loan, if we are unable to get our permenant target (if its not him)

At last a fellow minded fan! Now, will everyone else please read and take note of this comment. And then get on board with it because there's nothing more to this transfer saga than ROSM so aptly writes.
