I could name countless however i assume this is for bands that had a top 20 hit (ignoring the fact that many solid acts build up great followings without chart success).

Hurrah!and Mega CIty 4 had some chart success and were seemingly going to be big, only to lose it completely, didnt chart again and lost their following.

the Pevenseagull playlist this weeks has figured a number of mid/ late 80s:

The Chameleons - Strange Times L.P.

The Pale Saints - Barging into the presence of god E.P.

The Triffids - Born Sandy Devotional L.P.

Talk Talk - The Colour Of Spring L.P.

lots of Sarah records 7"s

Fad Gadget
Landscape
Gang of Four
Ultravox (I mean, what happened to the rest of them after Midge Ure went solo?)
Spandeau Ballet
Shriekback

Here's a couple of excellent Australian bands that few heard of outside their native land (or even inside their native land come to that)
Noiseworks, whose second album is top quality and rocks! 'River of Tears' has to be one of the better guitar classic-rock tunes by anyone.
Not Drowning, Waving. Somewhat artistic, very obviously talented, and way ignored.
Hear them if you can!
