I don't have a problem with the flags, but you're not allowed in with a plastic bottle with a top on for fear of firing it at someone - but they hand out 10,000 plastic sticks with which you could do so much more damage (either accidently or on purpose).

I buy a Pepsi every game and not once have they either taken the lid before giving it to me, or prevent me from going to my seat with the lid on the bottle...
Maybe they underestimate my throwing ability from the top of WSU? :)

unlikely given the flexibility of the stick

Young Winthorpe has just acquired a new flag, I'm not impressed. It reads 'BHAFC U30's RAPING MEN SINCE 2002.'

No idea where he got such a monstrosity.

How dare a man who put his own money and faith into a and making us money in the process promote his gig, how dare he give us flags and try and create a bit of feel good factor and while im on the subjest whats with people standing up or even singing for that matter, I would much prefer it if we started a gentlemans tea drinking society at the AMEX, we should aplaud both teams politly, but at a reasonable volume so as not to draw attention to ourselves, if one or the other team does something to credit and clap, come to think of it we should also have comfy blanket to place on the ground so in the nice weather we can enjoy a sandwich with a cup of tea and also get rid of the goals and that oversized ball, get a smaller red ball made of leather and some stumps and lets start playing cricket, or better still get rid of any sport being held there at all

Can you unsure that all members are dressed properly in tweed and drink with the pinkie finger sticking out! And drink from a tea cup and saucer, we'll have none of this mug nonsense please.

This is a ridiculous and sad thread........When i openly wept at the last game played at our beloved Goldstone I would never have thought that once in our incredible new home somone would be moaning about free flags given to supporters....did you travel to "home" games at Gillingham?.........If so i cannot imagine the levelling of moaning you MUST have done if this is your yard stick for what isn't right with BHA................ can't be bothered to waste anymore time on this reply...................................................

Personally I thought it looked good & gives the impression of people having fun. Mind you I watched on TV & from my vantage point in a West London pub picked up on peoples comments on how good it looked attending a match at Brightons great new stadium. It creates a good impression so long may it continue.

I thought it was a bit odd to be honest, but the club are trying all sorts of new things (I found the video before the game odd as well, but have got used to it)

What I found strange was the fans being used as advertising. I've never been asked to be an advert before, was confused and didn't join in.

Not that I really objected - but I went into the ground after it had started and was oblivious to the concert. I'm not into waving a flag with an odd logo on it unless I'm fully aware of why I'm doing it.

If I knew it for was Norman I would have had a quick wave. Not a huge one, but a respectful wave out of politeness. Not for his work with the club but more for the fact I used to serve him petrol years ago and he was always very polite when I inserted my nozzle into his mini.

You're missing the point a bit there. Nu-football in general frowns on fans creating their own atmosphere, standing up, singing and bantering with away fans. Having some fat Spurs prick pitchside on the P.A. shouting "Let's make some noise for the Albion!!!" etc, etc, before the game - f*** you fatty - we can make our own noise. The little plastic flags/advertising space is just another sop to the corporate/Americanization of the traditional game.

It's "sit down, shut up, and we'll decide how you enjoy the game that you've forked out the readies for". I grew up with a game where supporters were a big part of every game, noise, drama, and yes even menace, the crowd was as big a thrill as the match itself - that was what attracted me to the game - being a supporter, getting to shout and let off steam in a swaying heaving mass of other working people, not being treated like a consumer or a customer in a f***ing cinema.

Football is unlike any other sport, the fans being part of the whole package. I spent half the West Ham match ducking my head around hi-viz stewards bombing up and down the stairs - I sit on the end of a row - acting as if they were marshalling the Great Retreat from Mons, not servicing a crowd at a f***ing football match in Sussex. The slightest dissent is met with a warning, then frantic radio messages between the steward and his Obergruppenfuhrer "Stand Manager" (what the f*** is that all about?). I actually listened to them direct the CCTV Generalissimo to the offending 'enemy subversive' area of the stand, where some bloke had just stood up and gave two fingers at the West Ham crowd after they scored, shouting a few lines of industrial language as well no doubt.

I realise the game has changed, and the Albion are in a better position in the big shiny new place, but there are already signs of too much commercialisation - Reynolds the MC and the attempt to show lyrics (f***ing ada!) to our songs on the big screens.

It's almost like social engineering, I bet they sit on commitees at club level (f***ing bet your boots they do at FA level), deciding how to further 'control' a crowd of people who only want to go along with friends and family and watch a good display of the game they love, and have a bit of banter with the other lot up the far end. And that's the rub, we'll take the nonsense because WE DO love the game - the 22 men kicking the leather around - where else would or could you treat paying customers the way football does, and they still come back for more?

Good post. I feel the club has the attitude that "we have got the cctv technology and stewards - and we will use them" even though there is no trouble. 20 years ago all this HDCCTV and control room stuff would have come in handy, but not now. Far too many people have been banned already and it will only kill off the atmosphere at Falmer. Point the f***ing cameras at the away end and leave your own fans alone!!
By the way WTF is a "family atmosphere" and why do the club want one?

By the way WTF is a "family atmosphere" and why do the club want one?

That's what I've never quite understood. When I first started going as a kid, I was excited by the fact that people swore, the way it felt a bit edgy, the way people got so angry with the referee and the way the crowd went mental when we scored. If I had started going as a kid today, I don't think I would have found it as exciting.

I really don't see how fluffy mascots and goal music etc make much difference to whether a kid supports the club or not. And when you go as a kid you are taken by your parents anyway, it's when you get old enough to start going by yourself which is the most important time (from the clubs point of view) for you to get hooked, as it's then that you become a lifelong fan.
