I saw Before the Devil Knows You're Dead the other evening. Mayb ei am a bit older than i still like to imagine, but the film was dominated by two things: Philip Seymour Hoffman's almost impeccable performance as per usual, and Marisa Tomei's naked self in display. Hummana f***ing hummana. She's 44 now, but her pert booboids look newborn and full-bodied.
The story is reasonably well-told too, only spoilt by an excessive explosion of blood shed in increasing panic, and for Ethan Hawke's standardly inept performance.
Worth seeing overall, if not utterly splendiferous.

"Tomei, Tomei." i keep thinking in pictures of a Chucklevision hollywood porn, the beauty being rutted each end by our moustachioed, flat-topped heroes.

Utterly agree (especially about the rather yummy Marisa T ) Relatively favourable 5.4 for the film and 9.2 for MT!

Also agree with Les B re: bookends on SPRyan.....woefully tacky and SS (unfortunate initials, btw!) undoing and letting himself down again, so to speak. Agree with Les AND U.Sp re: Hanks performance being superior in SPR.

Saw "The Kite Runner" on Tuesday (Director Marc Forster) It's my fave so far this year by a country mile. It's the story of two young boys in Afghanistan who are friends but torn apart by events and decisions made by one of 'em during their childhood, set against the backdrop of Russia's imminent invasion and the later story of the now adult chief protagonists brief return to his homeland from America. Lyrical in places, it's well shot, dramatic and painfully sad. Apparently the book on which it's based is even better.

The weekend before last we (me and my 6 year old son) went with some friends to Chi to see Enchanted, but the local paper (Worthing herald or something) has printed the wrong times, so we ended up watching Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Ok, the kids seemed to like it, and Jason Lee (My Name is Earl) did a good job of talking to CGI chipmunks.

The kids enjoyed it, and my son was chatting to his friends about the film all the way home - so they clearly 'got it'.

Firehouse Dog

Got this out on DVD for a bit of family fare and it was a decent tale of a Dog joining a run down fire station, Ladder 55 and it turned its fortunes around. The Dog was the star obviously and it gave 100 minutes of light amusement.

Rocky Balboa

This is a complete triumph for Stallone who wrote, directed and starred in it. After the lame Rocky 5 Stallone ended the series on a complete high infact I would go as far as to say it was the best of the 6 films.

The story was well considered and time had been spent on the script with 2 stand out inspirational speeches by Stallone who does have some acting ability, he was nominated for a best actor Oscar for Rocky, the fight was very well done with some real technical bravado by Stallone.

I think this is a cracking good film and Stallone finished the series with a knock out.

Ever since Untamed Heart where Christian Slater ends up with a Baboons heart I have loved Miss Tomei.

Rocky Balboa

I watched this on Saturday, and have to say I thought it was SUPERB. It even made me CRY a little bit at the end (which I don't think I've dnoe since ET). I thought this film would be pretty daft, what with Stallone being 60-odd now and stepping back into the ring, but its done in such a way as to make it really quite credible. Opening myself to ridicule here, but Stallone gives an absolutely MASTERFUL acting performance. He slips into the role of Rocky one last time like a pair of comfortable old slippers, and the feelings of fond nostalgia for this character were at times overwhelming. During the final climactic fight scene, my arse was clenched so tight I'll be crapping diamonds for a week. Wonderful stuff, and a fitting sendoff for one of the most iconic screen characters of all time.

Post-script.
It was that good, it made me go out and buy the box set. I will be revisitting those classic Rocky movies soon.

Easy, I totally agree Stallone gave an excellent performance and this speech I often re visit when I need some inspiration and to get me going again when luck has been against me.

Shit hot film. William L.Petersen is an 80s god and Brian Cox is easily the best Lector.

You should check out To Live And Die In LA, another Petersen classic directed by William Friedkin who did The French Connection. Chase scenes are immense.
