Got to be Alex Dawson. If the ball was more than 4 inches off the ground he would always prefer to header it rather han use his feet.Made Andy Gray or Joe Jordan look like a wuss.Hence the features that made him look like a henchman from ``The Mob``.Played in the 64 cup final for Preston and I think he scored if my memory serves me right. Was on Man utds books for a few years as well.He was my hero when I was 9 and 10 but not many opposings goalkeepers I would think considering the thumpings he gave them..................................... Sammy Morgan must have been a keen student a few years later.

Me too. Fred Binney and Kit Napier would have been close, as would Sully when he arrived, but Alex - Alex Dawson ooo ooo was the man.

On a wet evening game he was standing in front of the keeper who was cradling the ball, for no apparent reason he launched himself head first at the ball. The goalie stepped aside and he slid along the turf.

He was part of the post Busby Babes team.

The whole French side of that era was awesome. Surely one of the best sides never to win a World Cup (up there with the Dutch of the '70s). Six, Tigana, Rochteau, Batiston, Giresse and of course Platini.

I think my fave World player was probably Zico, although you only ever got to see him play in the World Cups really. Rochteau or Platini otherwise.

My favourite ever Albion player is definitely Terry Connor, closely followed by Steve Penney and Garry Nelson.

Anyone remember Connor's overhead kick against Swansea in the FA Cup? Pure class.

And of course his majestic diving header at Norwich. erm, at the wrong end. :dunce: :lolol:

Good man, well done for remembering, they made an impression on me at 12.He reminded me of the guy off Fame. You forgot Fernandez.

Someone else must have liked Danny Wilson??

He was great, and a thoroughly nice man too. A shining star amid the Chris Hutchings blonde mulleted sea of mediocrity that was the Albion team of the late 1980s.

(oooh, i sounded a bit Stuart Hall there)

No need to apoligise meathseagull, at his prime he was brilliant.

He was solely the reason my half brothers supported Man Utd instead of Brighton despite living in Woodingdean.

My non Albion player has to be Bobby Charlton.

Original hero was Peter Osgood. He lived across the road from me in Windsor. A great centre forward.

My first Albion heroes were Brian Horton, Peter Ward and Ian Mellor. Ward and Mellor were just sensational together. Lawrenson was absolute class as well.

Back in Sussex
In the early to mid 80s my Dad and I had season tickets in the West Stand at The Goldstone.

It was during this spell that Dean Saunders joined and played for us.

I found that if I sung "Gino" by Dexy's Midnight Runners in my head (I hope someone knows what I mean by this) but substituting 'Deano' for the 'Gino' he performed better.

I'm not sure why I'm telling you this as I'm not sure he was my favourite player. Terry Connor was great.

terry Connor was class and that own goal was one of the best goals own or otherwise I have ever seen live. But I definitely agree that during the mid-80's mediocrity Danny Wilson stood out a mile - I even heard a rumour of a major dressing room split against him as his workrate was showing up the rest of the team? There are though many others during that period who were great - Dennis Mortimer who made Dean Saunders look so much better. Then the promotion team including Big Doug and Bremner and Nelson - that was one of the best seasons I remember.
