I've just invested 400 english pence on one of the greatest films in the last 20 years, and will be watching it again tonight for the first time in yonks. One of the most beautifully written, superbly scripted films of all time. Every character in this film is a JOY to watch, richly entertaining, and is given full licence by the Coen brothers to cut loose on the fabulous script they are working with. Buscemi is fabulous, Macy has never been better, and "Marge", as the preggers policewoman, if simply brilliant.

I agree wholeheartedly.... I saw this on the box.. I just happened upon it and I was hooked.... Macey very good.. watching him slowly crack under pressure... and, Our intrepid policewoman was brilliant..... Buschemi one of his best roles

William Macey is in another good film currently in the bargain bucket at Woolies - £2 I think - called "The Cooler". Well worth picking up if you see it, a decent indie film with Alec Baldwin, about a man employed to "cool" peoples winning streaks in a Las Vegas casino.

Well, I have to have SOMEWHERE left to go for if or when I see the perfect film.
If I'm being honest, I thought the sidetrack to when she meets up with the chinese guy she knew at school was a bit unnecessary, and added nothing to the plot. But thats nitpicking.

The way Macy's character gets backed into a corner and slowly unravels is just an incredible performance to watch. That on its own would be enough to give this film CLASSIC status, but when you've got Buscemi on this form, and Marge, well....

....it just don't get much better. Would be interested to see Uncle S's rating.

On the subject of classics I've been introducing my daughter to some of the films I consider classics. Untill recently she has thoroughly enjoyed our little video evenings untill we watched 'Blues Brothers' the other night.

She hated it.

Not a big fan of Fargo. The Coen's best film is Millers Crossing followed closely by Raising Arizona, Barton Fink and Big Lebowski.

Memorable mainly for that odd Wisconsin accent that they talk up there.

I just turned off Fargo about an hour into it. That should start to give you an indication as to how awful this highly over rated movie is. I hardly ever, ever, give a movie a 1 but in this case this movie deserves less than a 1. All I can tell you is that William H. Macey hired 2 people to kidnap is wife and played it like he had no idea so that his father-in-law would give him some money to get her back for ransom from the guys who stole her. The two guys kill 3 people and a pregnant woman is on the case of figuring out what happened.

Now if you know the Coen Brothers, you know this is what they do. Crime films shot from ever angle possible. Now I have nothing but respect for the Coens, I love their work, but this time they really messed it up. There is no acting down, so I don't know how in the world Frances McDormand won the Oscar and William H. Macey was nominated. The acting isn't poor it's just not there. They throw in a very annoying accent that is would have been much better left out. I also don't know how the Coen Brothers won for Best Screenplay because they're screenplay literally consists of the phrases "oh yeah" and "yeah" probably no less than once every ten seconds. If you look at the quotes I'm sure you can find in almost every quote the phrase "yeah" or "oh yeah". Not to mention they gave us characters that no one cares about. I don't care that William H. Macey has money problems because really I don't know why he has money problems and I don't want to sit around trying to figure that out or wait for you to tell me. No one in the movie is likable but at the same time no one in the movie is hate-able. It's just like the acting, it's nonexistent.

I didn't see anything good in this movie, I didn't even find it funny, and if you read a summary of the movie you will probably read words such as suspenseful, bloody, and kidnapping. Yet you see much attempt at humor, which is not even humor, it's just awkward moments that leave you wondering if you're actually supposed to be laughing. I have seen over rated movies, but they usually end up being pretty good films just too much hype. But Fargo? Seriously? Academy Award worthy and people still love to watch it to this day, twelve years later? Give me a break, 1/10.

A masterpiece of Shakesperean proportions, 11 November 2004

I've always thought Fargo would make a great Shakesperean play; you could alter the modern elements and still have created a buzz 400 years ago in suburban England. Indeed, the plot is similar to Hamlet's, in that they both have characters we root for who create zany plans than end up spinning wildly out of control into bloodshed. Many people seem to like Fargo for its humorous qualities, its characterization of the Minnesotan culture and Frances McDormand- not me. I love Fargo for its brilliant writing, its tragic musical score, its tragic plot, William H Macy, Harve Presnell and Steve Buscemi, its ignorance of political correctness (how many movies can you remember when the only two minority characters were both revealed to be creeps).I want to draw attention to an overlooked reason why the film works so well - how well the music suits the visuals in this movie. Each murder scene is scored superbly, and other audio clues really add to the effect (for instance, notice how when the police officer asks Carl Showalter "What's this?" in reference to the abductee, a disquieting guitar sound is immediately played that has an instantaneous psychological effect on how you interpret the scene). I have seen this film over, well, an embarrassing number of times and have committed its screenplay, from start to finish, by memory. Fargo is the ultimate Coen Brothers movie, a brilliant tragedy, and restores my faith in Roger Ebert as he places this movie in as his fourth favorite movie of the '90s.
