It's not about it being a simple job.

The £10m public liability insurance is in place for any work an approved contractor can do. This crossover job would evidently be merely a small job in comparison to what they're allowed to do.

My now ex has to have seven-figure public liability insurance for her school. It's not necessarily what any damage might be about; it is, with all things like this, there to cover the largest costs of any claim - the sodding solicitors.

Im sorry to hear "ex" Al, when did that all happen?

Leeds - but not the dirty bit
I had all the Bollocks from the council about eight years ago when widening gateway..They wanted approval from highways, planning application, curved radius, sightlines improved, kerb stones there were none, approved contractors etc etc.Sounded like 10k job. I hired mini digger did work in long afternoon inc hanging 10ft gate to replace eight foot one. Labour say £100 gate and post £120 digger hire £120.

The reason they insist on approved contractors is because it's not all about the dropped kerb. The pavement when first installed is built to accommodate the weight of pedestrians. When changing to allow a vehicle to run across it the base has to be strengthened to take their weight for the next umpteen years. So if doing it yourself make sure you can prove that you have done this or expect another hefty bill when the pavement sinks/ruts after you have used it for some time, or maybe a liability claim when a pedestrian trips over.
