I was quite encouraged to see Gus' comments in the Argus emphasising his certainty that CMS would have a better season.

But it did get me wondering......how good is he?

Most of the debate seems to have centred on him being overpriced (or not) and having no support. I mostly saw him last year in away games and clearly we were not getting the ball quickly enough anywhere near areas of the pitch where he could influence the game (Cardiff aside maybe). It's hard to look good when you don't get the ball although in fairness he did manage to impress with his energy and committment.

Brilliant club man and fantastic with the fans. Later in the season I thought he looked resigned to not having an impact? Maybe a bit unfair?

Technically I'm not sure his first touch is the best but as with almost all strikers he needs to feel confident and when he is (at Peterboro) we saw what he can do. I am far from convinced that a top striker needs to have a consistently good first touch tbh - too many examples prove otherwise.

We know he will train to try to improve and run until he drops so IF we can get people in alongside him to do what Boyd and McLean and McCann did and get the best from him, how good is he potentially?

EPL? Championship? League1...............?

Maybe if CMS ran around a bit less, his team mates would know where to find him. I mean, they've really not got time to scan the horizon to find out where he's running manically at any given moment. Compare and contrast with Ashley Barnes who can reliably be found loitering with intent by the penalty spot when the ball comes in. Easy to pick out. Having said that, if CMS ever gets a player he can build an instinctive understanding with - George Boyd springs to mind - then he'd be absolutely lethal. IMHO, like.

At times I have found myself asking similar questions. I do believe he will be better and score more goals this season, however, I doubt he will ever be a 20+ goals Championship scorer.

What bothers me when people talk about CMS is that they seem to completely ignore the start of the season where he looked a very good player for us. Pompey and Cardiff away , Sunderland and Leeds at home to name a few examples. His loss of form coincided with the teams slump, which appeared to completely dent his confidence.

He's shown he can do it for the club but IMO that came when he played ALONGSIDE Barnes at the start of the year. I'm convinced he can do it at this level and in our team, but he has scored goals throughout his career with a partner, so if we continually play one up I think he will struggle.

Horray,a sensible post about CMS.Just the same as the ones who say Noone's no good. They seem to forget the start of last season.

The question should be, does that mean Gus has learnt a bit, from his first season in charge at this level and is going to do things a bit differently. Because if not, I don't see what will change in the case of CMS.

I thought his form went down after he cut his hair

Oh god, another CMS thread. On the basis of last season, he is not very good at this level. On the basis of the season before he is a top class league 1 striker.

Gus needs to try CMS as a box-to-box midfielder.

He's not the best passer though so can't see that happening. The only way to make it really work is if we went all out attack like Peterborough which we would not do. We should have signed Billy Sharp instead imo

Like others have said, he worked excellently at the start of the season WITH Barnes in a 442, dunno why we didn't persist with it longer.

As others have said, the argument he didn't get any service is nonsense, as Barnes proved.

Now that really is a question. There's certainly a case for saying that Gus lost his way and maybe lost faith in playing how he wanted to with two relatively small but mobile strikers. Putting Barnes (the original concept was obviously Hoskins) alongside him might just be the answer with the height coming from a new midfield acquisition. Gus certainly never seemed happy (on the rare occasions he tried it) with either Sharp or Vokes playing the big striker role as it changed the way he wanted to set up the rest of the team.

Bearing in mind that only Doncaster created fewer chances last season in the championship, we'll never know the answer to this question until our great fuhrer structures his team around CMS.

I fear that what Gus really means is that CMS has to do better this year because we're not getting anyone else. Hope I'm wrong.

CMS would easily cut it at this level if our team was set up to play to his strengths IMO... He will never be a success as a lone striker.
He is obviously a confidence type player that needs decent support from another striker and midfield players that can pass the ball forwards. We haven't got any of those on our books at the moment!

His loss of form wasn't his fault... You can't score goals if the ball is being tippy tappied around in defence and your midfield colleagues dwell too long on the ball before losing it to the opposition!

These are facts, going by our lack of chances created being very poor on a per game ratio!

This post sounds like a whinge... Not intended, just a little frustrated at some of last seasons form! I think that we definitely over achieved last season and surely, we all want improvement, don't we?

If we can re-sign The Dagger and bring in some better quality players to up our tempo then yes I believe that CMS will show us what he can do!

I do feel sorry for CMS, don't really understand those slagging him off either as I assume they are mainly looking at goals / games stats (yes I get a striker is paid to score goals) but to be fair to CMS, he DOES make those runs you want a forward to make. Seen him plenty of times make great runs between the defenders into space only for our midfield to not pick him out and play a 5 yard sideways pass or hit it back to the defence. I know we play possession football but he really is not helped at all by the midfield consistently failing to pick him out when the killer ball is on and instead wait until his has 2 markers on him before playing the ball into him.
