and I don't like sounding like I'm having a go at CMS as I like the guy and his approach to football, I just don't see that Gus is gonna change our style to suit him
As said I don't believe this is Gus' style of play.
I think it's what he had to do, when he realised we weren't quite up to the job.

He definitely got it horribly wrong on occasions last year, I hope that you are right, I just don't understand why he couldn't see what most fans could see and left CMS up front out on a limb for 80% of the season.

Bridcutt Navarro & Barnes were very good at the job they had to do, which was defensive.
The moment LB & Nav didn't do the job of 1 player, we were over run.
Gus was let down by other midfielders Harley and Sparrow.

So we were left with a lop sided midfield, 1 winger and a distance centre forward, because we had 2 sometimes 3 players doing the job of 1.

Gus paid 2.5 million for him and that is what we were expecting - a 2.5 million pound striker. We haven't had that yet but I reckon we,ll see 15 goals from him next season.

The video of his days at Peterborough make him look a better player than he ever achieved for us. He seems to be lacking in confidence.

The things that struck me about the vid, in comparison to us was:-

How fast the ball went forward
&
How much company CMS had, in and around the box.

What bothers me when people talk about CMS is that they seem to completely ignore the start of the season where he looked a very good player for us. Pompey and Cardiff away , Sunderland and Leeds at home to name a few examples.

He was dreadful in the first half against Leeds. Granted he was unplayable in the second but sadly we saw more of his first half performance than we did his second half throughout the season.

Jury is still out on the guy, it has to be. I hope he comes good I really do but I'm not convinced he will.

Is that the video of:

P'boro against Championship defenders -CMS had little joy; or

CMS on the rampage against League One defenders.

Championship is of a far higher standard.

Well here is the conundrum. Do we change the way we play to get the best out of our most expensive signing or do we continue as we are and play what I would call boring football. I don't know?

I've noticed this 'boring football' myth being trotted out by the more impatient, anti Gus posters. What's boring about keeping possession and trying to build attacks from the back?

But why do you think we haven't seen that yet? The player or our tactics?

A bit of both to be honest. He lost his way after a promising start but we played some pretty sideways stuff mid season and did not pick his early runs up. He needs to bide his time with some of those early movements when we are playing the more patient game. That is his weak area - his hold up play - the ball bounces of him too often. Both Gus and Craig will have learnt though. ( I hope )

100% agree well said.
Do people really believe Gus wanted to play 2 defensive midfielders and play Barnes as an attacking midfielder / left forward type?

He obviously knew we weren't good enough defensively from the start and set up that way to make the best of the players at his disposal to guarantee as many points as we could.. Made a very good job of it to in my opinion..

We're a few players off an excellent championship team and when we get the players to fill the gaps we can then play two wingers and attacking positive football like some people want (the way we did to get out of league one) ..

Last season we simply didn't have the players to do that, not unless we wanted to concede more then we scored!

Last season, EVERY single one of the away games I went too the football we played from memory was extremely tedious. That i think was 15 odd away games ish, and pretty much everyone around me was thinking/saying the same thing.
Doncaster, Coventry, Forest, Birmingham, Derby, Leicester, Palace, Bristol City, all of them amongst others the football we played was extremely tedious.

I honestly believe CMS can play in our style of football. As others have actually suggested, 442 would be perfect, but with a play maker behind CMS to deliver. This would mean a shift from playing the ball about in the defence putting that play about into the midfield. I'm personally worried that since we've now had a season in the 2nd tier, other teams are going to see how we play and automatically push forward when we begin to play at the back.

If we could possibly sign someone who works well with CMS, or even get Barnes (or Hoskins if he does decide he wants to stay at BHAFC) to this job whilst getting midfield to be more attacking minded. Then I honestly believe we could be dangerous.

Should show the boys a season of how Barcelona plays, and try and adapt that to our players. More possession, but definitely more attacking in essence. We do appear, more particularly towards the end of the season to be more defensive. This could be for a number of reasons, or my own poor analysis, but that's how I saw it. But now our boys have experience here, they obviously know what the competition is going to be like and knowing they were in the play-offs at one point will hopefully spur them on to push harder, play better and reward themselves, the club and us fans better.
