CMS - How good is he?

He has a terrible first touch.

I was about to type that.

Unless that improves he will remain a prolific League 1 striker but a very average but willing lower Championship one.

Gus needs to try CMS as a box-to-box midfielder.
Ridiculous.
Gus needs to give CMS the service any forward requires, for goals.

Like others have said, he worked excellently at the start of the season WITH Barnes in a 442, dunno why we didn't persist with it longer.

As others have said, the argument he didn't get any service is nonsense, as Barnes proved.
Penalty taker Barnes wasn't playing as a forward, and was predominately in a position at the back of the box to collect the ball, and shoot.
CMS was on a hiding to nothing all season, alone, against 2 quality centre backs, with the nearest Albion player 20 yards away.
If Gus says CMS will be better, which I think/hope he will be, it must be because we will be playing more to his strengths.

Oh and he would have been top scorer, if he had half an inch longer studs.
When we did play as a proper attacking wingers (KLL) team, CMS would have had another 5 goals, from sliding in on properly delivered crosses.

But if you can't buy a goal that's what happens.

His style doesn't fit in with the way we play, so one of them has to change. If you think it's gonna be Gus I'd say you were dreaming.

Said it before, I'm desperate for us to play to CMS strengths. It's mind blowing stuff to pay all that money for a goal scorer and then play defensive football with no target man for him to feed off. I REALLY hope Gus has seen this so the haters will shut up.

Problem for CMS is that when at Peterborough in League 1, he scored a lot of his goals from flick ons when he can beat the defence for pace, or balls over the top where he can ... beat the defence for pace ... and slot past the keeper.

In the Championship ...
1 Defenders are quicker and less likely to be done by balls over the top
2 We didn't generally play a lofty striker who can consistently win balls in the air

Gus's style of play will deliver a hatful of goals for CMS when either ...
a We get midfielders who can consistently deliver killer balls into the channels for him to run onto. The only ones who showed signs of doing that were Vicente, occasionally Dicker and - on the rare occasion we got to see him - JFC.
b Our speedy wingers deliver killer crosses where CMS can nip in front of his man to score in the six yard box. We got some of these early on, but very few later in the season. Partly due to poorer quality from wide out, and partly due to CMS getting outmuscled in the danger area.

IF we can re-sign Vicente plus further midfield quality, CMS could flourish.
IF Gus changes his approach to play two upfront, and teams him with a beast of a striker, CMS could flourish.

I reckon the first option is easily the more likely.

His style fits perfectly how we want to play, or else we wouldn't have brought every available winger.
But:-

Noone can't cross, is lightweight, and has no positional awareness.
Buckley is less of a bye-line & cross winger as he has the skills to come inside.
KLL is the player we need but was injured or out of the team.

If you're telling me Gus' way to play is 3 defensive midfielders, next season will be very long.
Now that we have laid the foundations in this division we should have enough about us to be able to play, 2 wingers, and not get overrun in midfield.

You sure about that.
There's not much here that we saw, from our TEAM at the Amex last season.

Well then why did he pay that money for him to play him up front on his own? it's crazy!

Maybe he thought he was better than he has been so far? I know I ended up being disappointed and it's a cop out to blame the way we play.

With wingers pinging the balls in I'd have thought a forward with far more presence in the box, a good 1st touch and great heading ability is what we need, Do you really think CMS can deliver that?

Really?? A man and his dog can see we are not playing to his strengths! In my opinion it is 100% down to our tactics that CMS is not doing what we all know he can do.

So Gus is gonna change the way we play to suit one player? Really? Maybe for Vicente (but then it's the quality of player rather than the stayle we need to change there) but not for CMS imo.

Or maybe signing someone to help him out and playing him every game? I don't mean to sound like i'm having a go at you, I respect you as a poster but surely you can see that the way we play is not helping him?

In bucket loads.
But not if he's the only person in there, what striker wouldn't.

Well here is the conundrum. Do we change the way we play to get the best out of our most expensive signing or do we continue as we are and play what I would call boring football. I don't know?

and I don't like sounding like I'm having a go at CMS as I like the guy and his approach to football, I just don't see that Gus is gonna change our style to suit him

That's a sentiment I/we all should to use more, on here.
