They're going to struggle to sign any star quality this window all the while they're staring the Championship in the face. What also won't help is the current lack of an experienced CEO / Director of Football to help grease the wheels, use some contacts and get deals over the line (keep your powder dry please Dan).

I guess they'll potentially get some mercenaries who will sign for the silly money IF there are release clauses in case they end up making trips to Barnsley and Luton next season. The rest of the squad already know they're all likely to be replaced whether they stay up or not - that'll be really motivating for them.

Doubt it...

Apparently the £20M buyout is only active this summer. But Newcastle have offered it now. If true will be interesting to see what Burnley do

Half a season to go. Did you see the end of last season in the Championship ? Everyone who looked nailed on stayed up.

I did... but I've also seen Barnsley and have a good idea about what is happening in that club. They have a Swedish CEO and something as unusual as a Swedish manager so I've been curious about them for a couple of months, watching their games and learning about their situation. They are not staying up.

3 goals in 21 games says he isn’t their best striker!

Presumably the theory is ASM, Trippier and Fraser will provide the service he doesn't get at Burnley. But I'd be LESS than inspired if this was a BHA signing. £20m+ for a 30-year old who's never been prolific ? I guess the horse-punchers do have money to burn, but bloody hell.

Just read the thread properly! Missed the buy-out clause bit.

But on top of that don't they have a new owner who's 'done a bit of a Glaziers' so might just have taken the cash anyway.

Wood has 3 Prem goals in his last 21 appearances. Cornet has 6 goals and is now Burnley's main man.

With £25mill in their pocket and Preston only 20 miles down the road it might be worth a cheeky £15 mill bid for Emil Riis Jakobson. At 6 foot 3, 23 years old with excellent hold-up play he would be a good option if they could get him.

Newcastle don't need to be any good this season. They just need Burnley to be worse than them. I guess this is what this signing is all about.

It does make you wonder why they bought the club now rather waiting till the summer.

Mad Mike is a super sharp businessman and I bet he couldn’t believe it when they bought the club when they did. He’s held on, sold the club at the optimal time and made a profit to boot - must’ve seen them coming.

He must be very amused watching them scratching around for signings and facing relegation. Is Wood really the best they can do?

Locadia probably turned them down….

I think he adds something to the Newcastle side but clearly only a short term signing. He won't start ahead of Wilson and both can expect to be replaced within 18 months

The Geordies must be getting really excited with all these incoming exotic signings, it's a clever ploy by their zillionaire owners who are actually massive Sunderland fans.

Wilson is out for eight weeks now.

They need some presence up front to try and survive. Even better if you can torpedo one of your three-from-four relegation rivals in the process.

Well I think he's shitehouse, won't score for the rest of the season.
Bumley will spend the money wisely and finish above the horse punchers.

The Newcastle contract lawyers are going to be busy with release clauses and wage continuation clauses the players will want in case of relegation. Could be a very expensive half season for them!
