Bridcutt to Derby

Bridcutt was fantastic at doing the specific job that Poyet moulded him to do... at Brighton. However that has made him incredibly one dimensional as a player, and he couldn't cut it in the Premier League.

This all day long..... Looked exceptional in a Poyet team (apart from Sunderland)

Didn't look as great under Oscar in a slightly different role and one could argue that he wouldn't fit into the system we now play under Hughton.

I can't remember a player who burnt his bridges so badly when leaving the albion.

Left under a dark thundercloud, and there will be no way back for him here.

Derby are starting to looks certs to go up, let's hope their rookie manager turns out to be a bit useless. Whatever we think of Bridcutt he is absolute quality at this level.

He was absolute quality at this level. Whether this remains the case, after a two year hiatus when he hasn't been up to much, is a different question. By contrast, whenever Kayal has been fit, he has been quality.

His goals from midfield will make the difference to Derby between promotion and relegation. His assists must be worth at least 30 points a season. Truly he is a god to be worshipped.

Goals weren't Derbys problem last season, it was their defense. Having Bridcutt in the DM role, will sort that problem out..

2.5mil? It was more like 4 as they stayed up wasn't it?!

At the time of the transfer Johnny Cantor tweeted that the fee was 3.25 million + add-ons.

In a couple of posts on here since, El Presidente has indicated that one of the add-ons was 250k if Sunderland stayed up in 2013-14, and either 200k or 250k for reaching 20 and 40 appearances (there was no add-on for staying up in 2014-15).

As Bridcutt has made 30 Premier League appearances so far, the current figure is therefore likely to be around 3.75 million.

The comments under that article make interesting reading..one such is this:
I think that the problem here is Poyet is unlikely to work again, unless Lineker takes over at Leicester and employs him and no-one else was interested in Bridcutt at the time. Its not like he was being talked about. It was a classic case of thick ex footballer turned coach buys players from his ex club because he knew them and a good reason not to give them the cheque book.

Personally i never thought of GP as thick

Officially it was undisclosed. I believe at the time the press took the 2.5m figure and ran with it (if memory serves, Gus was interviewed and apparently didn't correct any rumoured fees while talking about what a steal it was, which probably was good enough for most press to take 2.5 as right). The rumours at the Brighton end was that it was a lot closer to 5m.

It always happens, the buying team leak a lower price, selling team a higher price. Palace fans will tell you Zaha went for 15m. Man Utd fans will tell you it was barely 10m. The rest would have been add ons, that they almost certainly didn't have to pay. We claim we sold Barnes for 750k, but Dyche claimed he didn't spend more than 450k on any player, or only spent a total of 450k on players.

I don't think it was near £5m, but if it was we got almost £20mil in transfers that season. Silly money!!
