Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
Over the last couple of years, I have been having trouble sleeping.
It seems to happen for one or two nights, then I'm fine for a week or two, when it happens again.
I go to bed knackered, then after an hour or two of trying to get to sleep, I give up, go back down stairs, watch telly or surf the old internet for a couple of hours, have a cup of hot milk, go back to bed and sleep like a log.
Is it an age thing?
It is getting more frequent as time goes by.
I won't see 50 again!

I'm sat in a hotel room in hong kong after a sleepless night watching the football which kicked off about 4am here.£ found it no problem and I think you are right it is an age thing. I fimd that I can manage on less sleep these days but beware the inappropriate compensatory nap!

Waking is a habit, then if you do something it'll become brain activity and that'll become habitual.
After 50 you probably wake to take a visit to the loo anyway, not much getting away from that

You need some decent porn Graeme. I'm afraid my large collection has long gone but i find redtube.com just as good. Tug one out before beddy-byes and you'll sleep like a log mate.

Had this problem for years, I can't seem to stop the brain from working and find it a job getting to sleep let alone staying asleep.
I've been told learning meditation skills and technique may work but I don't know any.

I've got into the 'bad' habit of dropping off around 9PM and waking around 5AM. I have seen my doctor as I have had serious insomnia in the past. I do have sleeping tablets but I only take them if really necessary as I don't want to get hooked on them. You tend to find that it's a problem with relaxation and in fact there are exercises for that although to be honest I haven't found them too helpful. The only beneficiary is the dog as she gets long early morning walks. If in doubt see your GP.

Over the years, I've found some techniques that work for me on the times when I've struggled with sleep.... they may work for you.

If you have a lot of thoughts whirling in your mind, have you tried to write it all down before you go to bed? Getting it off your mind and onto paper often works.

Listening to relaxing music with the volume low can also work.

If you have a history of sleepless nights on the same bed, turning your body 180 degrees can also play a trick on your body by breaking that pattern of what your body is used to.

I have much the same problem and I'm 28. One thing that I find helps is to not brush your teeth immediately before bed, as that tends to wake you up, but to do it an hour before.

Having a hot bath is supposed to help as well.

I don't so much have sleepless nights but I have a problem where it takes me up to two hours sometimes to get to sleep and I'm still a teenager. I've tried reading, doing a bit of working out before bed and hot baths but I can't help thinking about things, despite me being tired. It really does affect me as I always feel more tired in the morning than before I went to sleep. Any tips?

Went on a long bike ride yesterday afternoon.
Finished off the evening with my home made Jennifer Aniston complilation DVD, so that didn't work.

Yes, I have a similar problem. I wake up several times in the night, then very early in the morning - from about 4.00 am onwards. It's generally worse during the week when I've been at work - stress!!! I can rarely get back to sleep again, apart from the fact that I'm also in pain from a medical condition. I find, therefore, the only option is to get up, which also relieves the pain. Fortunately, I'm a morning person, but preferably not that early. As a result, I'm permanently tired and going to bed early doesn't help!

What about sleeping on the sofa for a few nights-
if all goes well you will have got the rest you need
and if goes badly you will be very much in need of serious sleep and a comfortable bed

I've found that when trying to get back to sleep after waking, count backwards from 300, very slowly, picturing the number in your mind. I've never counted down to 1 (rarely below 200) and you often start to get muddled with where you are numbers wise - don't think too hard, just try and pick up with the last number you can remember for sure and continue counting down again. It really works for me!

The main problem I have over the past year or so (I'm 51 now) is night cramps, being woken up by excruciating cramping pains in my feet, calves etc. I usually have to leap out of bed and stand and walk about. That makes you really angry I can tell you! Especially as it can happen 2 or 3 times a night sometimes...
