Have the same issue, shift work tends to have that effect.

I've been told

-don't watch TV or use the computer for an hour before bed
-have a warm (not hot) bath
-don't drink normal tea, coffee, anything fizzy or eat within an hour of bed, particularly not stuff like chocolate or spicy things.
-drink chamomile tea....tastes terrible IMHO but scientifically proven to have a relaxing effect
-read a book

Perversely I find that, if I lie in bed trying to keep my eyes open, I soon find they're closing & I'm nodding off half the time.

I've got into the 'bad' habit of dropping off around 9PM and waking around 5AM. I have seen my doctor as I have had serious insomnia in the past. I do have sleeping tablets but I only take them if really necessary as I don't want to get hooked on them. You tend to find that it's a problem with relaxation and in fact there are exercises for that although to be honest I haven't found them too helpful. The only beneficiary is the dog as she gets long early morning walks. If in doubt see your GP.

what else do you want to do at 5 am when you when you have been asleep for 8hrs .......you make me laugh you do .....

Phenergen is a travel sickness remedy and that works well too. Also the bit about the book is good but been told better to read it whilst not in bed. Something to do with the brain associating bed with sleep and nothing else.....well at my age anyway!!

A lot of time stress and anxiety is to blame for sleeplessness. Your body is continually in an anxious state and therefore not allowing itself to wind down.

Whilst bedtime routines some people follow above can help with the odd sleepless night, I'd suggest that if its a prolonged thing that people look at themselves in a different way to see if they can find an answer....

I find the first of these especially good and yes I think it is a age thing and the trouble is TV after midnight is shite other than the occasional decent film.
suggestion is get some really good DVD's of films you like and go through the lot
I sometimes go 3/4 days with out sleep and then it finds its way back to normal,
I am looking forward to long walks on the beach when I eventually get back to Brighton in the early hours of the morning

Those panic attacks can be a bit frightening the first time you have one, When it comes down to lack of sleep my main problem is constantly being woke up by pain and I just spend most of the night trying to get comfortable where ever I can.

I'm 56, still it's handy for me when I'm working some distance away.

This happens to me now and again - usually when I'm travelling for work the next day so must be anxiety or something. Two weeks ago I flew to Dublin and back on less than three hours sleep and last week drove to the Midlands and back on about the same. I'm always amazed at how well I can function on so little sleep and the following night I am always crashed out.

Try one of Glenn Harrold's self-hypnosis CD's - they really work ! The first time I tried listening, I slept like a baby, and anytime I feel a bit stressed, I always give GH a listen, and it works a treat.

I think one of the biggest problems is the anxiety you feel about NOT sleeping (how am I going to make it through the day, etc), so once you feel genuinely calm inside, you are able to drift off into a really deep, refreshing sleep.

Over the last couple of years, I have been having trouble sleeping.
It seems to happen for one or two nights, then I'm fine for a week or two, when it happens again.
I go to bed knackered, then after an hour or two of trying to get to sleep, I give up, go back down stairs, watch telly or surf the old internet for a couple of hours, have a cup of hot milk, go back to bed and sleep like a log.
Is it an age thing?
It is getting more frequent as time goes by.
I won't see 50 again!

Cut back on caffeine. After say lunchtime, restrict yourself to 1 mug of tea max.

I literally can't remember the last time I had a good nights sleep. I always wake up more tired than I was was before going to bed.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
Some good advice coming through.
Thanks everyone.
I must admit that last night, a work thing, certainly nothing to worry about, was the problem.
Sometimes it's something exciting at work that I'm thinking about that I'm looking forwards to. (Yes Mr J, it's true!).
It seems that if there's something that needs doing, until it's done, I think about it, usually when I'm trying to get to sleep.
I'm the same at with things I haven't done at home too.
If for example I've got a computer problem, I can't sleep until I've solved it.
I have stayed up nearly all night sometimes until I've finished something.
I certainly sleep well when I've finished something or solved the problem.
