Brentford, Fulham, Forest, Bournemouth, Villa, Newcastle all being very good doesn’t happen every season either.

Neither does Spurs and Utd being utterly shite. Villa and Newcastle have been good for a couple of seasons. But heck, this is likely the third season in 4 that we have finished top ten, what's not to like.

I feel like a draw in Fulham Brentford would be the best result?

A point lost, knocks Fulham out of reckoning and puts our fate in our hands if we beat Liverpool.

I think people pointing to ManUtd & Spurs as evidence of this being a poorer quality PL season is wrong. There is a reason Saints nearly broke the lowest total record and all 3 promoted sides struggled - and that is it’s been of a high standard through a large section of the league.

I dare say ManUtd have been poorer in recent seasons, but from Wolves, to us, Brentford, Bournmouth - there have been no easy results for them to fall back on, sides have been very good quality right down the league.

Already with 2 or 3 to play it’s looking like the top 7 will finish 65+ pts.

I wouldn’t take anything away from us finishing top half and with >55pts. With the injuries, new manager, new players, we’re seeing a very decent season.

No way! In reality, that last European spot is between Palace, Brentford and ourselves. Bournemouth and Fulham are in it, but have unfavourable fixtures given that they both probably need maximum points - they both play Man City who are far from guaranteed top 5. Bournemouth then have Leicester at home (3 points) and Fulham are at Brentford next week as you say. But they do both need 6 points.

In order for us to have a chance, we will need 4 points. Then it will be all about whether Brentford can match that or better, or Palace win the cup. It would be therefore handy if City won the cup and Fulham beat Brentford for us.

Fulham are 4 behind us as it is, so we won't get European football anyway if we can't finish above them with that sort of head start and 2 games left.

I guess just didn’t want it becoming more of a 3 or 4 horse race on the final day - ie if we lose against Liverpool (very possible) and Bournemouth lose to Man City (very possible) then a Fulham win makes it all a LOT more complicated and messy.

However yes, IF we beat Liverpool then Fulham winning is the best result, as that means - if Bournemouth DON’T beat Man City - a point against Spurs would clinch it for us.

A FEW ifs and buts there.

A 3 or 4 horse race actually suits us as it means we are likely to become.fron runners. At the moment, Brentford are likely to need 4 points from Fulham and Wolves and hope Palace don't win. If they lose to Fulham, we take control of the race going into the last day with a draw against Liverpool- unless Bournemouth then win their game in hand at Manchester City.

The truth is that given the fixtures, 8th is Brentford's to lose.

Not sure our chairman would agree !

I guess it depends on what runs deeper his footballing hatred of Palace or his business hatred of Matthew Benham.

Given where he spends matches when we play Brentford I think I know the answer but I’m sure deep down he’d rather neither of them got the place in Europe and if it can’t be us he’d rather it be Plucky or Fulham.

In the cold.light of day, surely even for Uncle Tony it would be better that Brentford got Europe over Palace. Otherwise it means Palace have won a.trophy before us - surely nobody wants that. Adding irritating Plucky into the mix and you've got to say Tony's best move is to promise our players a £1m bonus each for winning their last two games and hoping for the best! If we don't get there then it's a bit of a Hobson's choice isn't it.

Every time I see this thread title I think '4 pints'. That's far too much for me at lunch time. I'm out.

I would rather we blow out on finishing 8th if Palace win the Cup. Losing our place to them would hurt far more than missing out due to us coming up short.
That's weird. I would rather be slapped in the face once rather than twice.

But I would rather we finish ninth and miss out on Europe if this guaranteed Palace not winning the cup.

Corrected for you
That's quite a good correction. But why opt to be slapped and punched when it would be better to be slapped and not punched, or punched and not slapped (depending on whether you think that us not getting into Europe is better or worse than Palace winning the cup)?

There is also the aspiration of being neither slapped nor punched, of course.

I am a simple soul, if Palace win the Cup we are not getting into Europe. It really is that simple…to me

The ideal is of course is Palace being humped in the Cup and us just doing the best we can and see what happens. No recriminations from me if we don’t make Europe and unbridled joy if we do.
