Many people have been moaning that £35m upfront and £20m add-ons is too low, but they need to think about it. As it t was either that or lose him earlier, as Brighton got Europe from the deal, which is worth a lot more than £55m as it raises the club's level and status, making them more attractive for better players, advertisers etc etc the list is endless.
Personally, I think it is a very clever work by Barber and Bloom.
👍

I'm sad he's gone but that's football.

Spare a thought for poor old Dibley. He can pretend that he gets the rivalry as much as he wants but deep down he must be somewhat rueful seeing a club that does not stand in the way of a player movin' on up. Nah, on reflection, don't bother.

You're right, people forget that had he not signed a contract extension before the world cup I believe he would have gone on a free at the end of this month. By signing, he's ensured that Brighton get a fee for him. The comparisons to Cucurella are nonsensical because he still had about 4 years left on his contract and no 'special' clauses.

As has been mentioned many times in this thread, even without signing his extension Mac was still under contract to next year.

The BBC says that one reason he has moved was his desire to win more trophies. Nothing against him, I think he's done this as a model professional, and I bear no ill will at all. But wouldn't it be great if we actually win more than Liverpool over the length of his contract. Pipe dream maybe - but then again, I never ever envisaged us qualifying for Europe (except maybe through a cup).

He’s gone there to triple his wages and secure a big wedge for his old man. Anything else is irrelevant BS. I wish him well, been great for us and never acted like a **** over leaving, unlike some others.

Absolutely this. Nothing to do with playing in Europe. It's all about money first and foremost. Wouldn't be a breath of fresh air if a footballer came out and said he was moving because he was going to be getting huge wages and will be a multimillionaire in no time ? I honestly think he would get more respect instead of the usual bollox spouted?

AM was a reliable player. I cannot recall a bad performance. We have been good at replacing high value (value not necessarily just marked in a fee) players in the past. Can we continue doing that? We may not always get in right. My main concern is we need overall a bigger squad in depth with European matches next season. With that in mind we need more quality players not just replacements. It would be good to hear players come out and say theyve chosen us rather than we have picked up another unknown wonder kid. Not that Im complaining about our recruitment far from it. Maybe im just a bit p'd off we dont get the recognition we deserve. I must stop listening to TalkSport radio!

Par for the course. Same as Dunk when he was getting new contracts very regularly. Or trying to leave us to go to Fulham

The constant plaudits we have received regards being the best run club in the Prem and how we find gems for nothing and sign them on for huge fees will take a big hit with this one.Let's see what people say about us now.As for Liverpool I know they have done nothing wrong but it just feels like the big club taking advantage of the small club.It stinks. Very very disappointed.

Why ? We set the terms, in agreement with Ale. Pre the WC this was a great deal for us, no-one could have predicted how this would work out. He could have refused the new contract and left now for much less. Our long term strategy is strengthened (allowing players to move when it’s right for both sides), he goes with the club’s blessing, it’s very early in the close season so we have time to bolster the squad and other players will look at us as a great place to develop.
