JP did ok at Boro and Leicester. Got to start somewhere. Thought he looked a little slow to react around both goals and perhaps you just don't get the speed of things till you play and actually find out. But it isn't good to have Dunky sidelined to the left rather than have a genuine left sided c/b even for one game. It worked well with Colwill. It's been so long since Webster played, I can't even remember if he plays on the left or right, but I'd rather have a specialist left on the left. If JP is the guy, I'd prefer to see him play on the left and keep Dunky on the right.

From what I can remember Webster normally plays on the right and Dunk on the left when it's just the two of them. Previously when we played a 3 with Ben White, Webster would switch to the left and White would play right, while Dunky played the sweeper role.

You're right. Whenever we play a 3, it tends to be Webster on the left, Dunk in the middle, White/Veltman on the right.
Can't see RdZ switching to a 3 though. I'm assuming that Webster will return on Sun and, if so and he plays alongside Dunk, will be interesting to see if as a pair the again play with Web on the right and Dunk of the left of it.

Webster is the best Center half we have. Fact!

He didn't have a good game. Not the end of the world. Both at the time and in hindsight I would have preferred Veltman or Webster starting next to Dunk but hey ho, at least it was a brave decision to give JPVH a start.

Personally still think he should go out on loan to get six months of game time every week in a decent league like Bundesliga or Serie A... regardless if any defenders are signed. With a back four, Dunk/Webster/Veltman/Colwill should be enough.

He was fine.

Made one error when he switched off on the goal, otherwise steady for a debut.

I would hope so too, we’ve done a lot of careful work developing him.
Have we? Shipped him out on loan and then brought another player in on loan to limit his game time despite knowing we wouldn't have been able to keep that player longer than a season. JPVH must feel like an after thought and really question how much he's rated here. I wouldn't blame him if he felt like this isn't the club where he can expect to play a good number of games and really develop his career the way that he must surely be expecting to and hope for.

Different coaching regime brought in Colwill though, right?

Assuming Potter and his team wanted Colwill then perhaps he (JVPH) wasn't rated much but RDZ has given him a chance. Perhaps he wouldn't have had Webster remained fit and Colwill hadn't turned out to be such a good young defender but I think JVPH is pretty well thought of.

Just gut feelings.

Needs to ask not to be selected then

My gut feeling is that none of that would bother me at all if I were JPVH, all I would be focusing on is the lack of game time and preference for a player we were developing for another club. I think JPVH has been taken for granted so far, but we'll see how he gets on this season. He only got game time at the end of last season because Dunk was injured.

Hmm. A solid championship loan where he won player of the season, followed by a season around a top 6 Premier League squad with sporadic minutes and cup games. Natural progression is a decent role for him this season.
This is based on my opinion only but I have a feeling that De Zerbi has him above Webster in the pecking order.

Yeah fair but I can't imagine he's too bothered seeing as he signed a new deal

Unless he shares agents with Caicedo and they've given JVPH spectacularly bad advice as well.

How much of his improvement is down to us I don’t know but we have extended his contract so we must rate him enough to either play him or sell at a profit. He still has to develop further but won’t do that in another team - he needs to play matches for us and keep training with the squad. We’re not going to let him go without a replacement, and I think it’s too late for one of those.
He is worth what someone is prepared to pay - looks like that isn’t going to be as much as he is rated by the club.

Right centre back vs left centre back though isn’t it? Colwill & Van Hecke would more likely play along side each other rather than instead of one another.

He did a number on Haaland, as opposed to Webster who rolled over and had his tummy tickled.

With JPVH I just feel like he is alright. I'm reminded of a younger Dunk when watching how clumsy he is so there's the hope he'll grow out of that, but he looks like a penalty, yellow, red card waiting to happen IMHO. We've just signed a vastly experienced CB for 14 million, so if someone offered us that kind of money for him I'd bite their hand off. People will point to the Man City game but that's not normal. Man marking Haaland seems a difficult task so fair play for that, but his bread and butter is going to be much more orthodox. Can he deal with being turned or dragged wide by a Watkins, does he have the positional nous and composure against teams attacking us on the break, is he strong enough to deal with the set piece threat of a Brentford? I'm not so sure. Him and Igor at the back will definitely be eventful.
BUT if RDZ fancies him that's all that matters.
