Spending ages in the gift shop on holiday choosing picture postcards to send to family and relatives (and you returning home before the postcards arrived). Always went for the multi picture cards with the main picture, usually of the beach on a sunny day ten years ago, in the middle.

Collecting those large 50 peseta coins so you could phone home from a Spanish pay phone for about a minute.

Remembering phone numbers

The weird - and annoying thing about this, is that I can still remember all those bloody phone numbers of my mates in the 1970's. I have also retained the full lyrics of "The Court of King Caractacus" by Rolf Harris - etched permanently into my brain at the age of 9 or so. I really dont need to waste storage space in my brain retaining this information, but there seems to be no way to move it to the recycle bin.

If I could only do that, I might have space to store and remember things that I did last week.

Maybe merge those two skills and remember Rolf’s phone number - so you can block it if he ever calls?

In my own strange world
Green Shield stamps, I remember my parents collecting millions of the things, sticking them in to books which were traded in for household items from the Green Shield stamp shop, which, if my memory serves me well was in Western Road in Brighton.

Walking down the phone box to ask the operator if she'd heard how the Albion were getting on away to Grimsby or wherever.

An open coal fire in the classroom. St Pauls Brighton, down West Street.

In the art hut at school was a cast iron pot-bellied stove inside a mesh cage. I used to spend ages breaking bits off pencil rubbers and trying to get them to land on top of the stove. Lovely acrid smell when I succeeded.

Hmm ...In 1979, I was refused service in the King and Queen for being underage - I was 22 at the time.

There were plenty of pubs that wouldn't serve kids underage. The trick was to find ones that did and stick to them. My mates and I drank in the Stanmer on Fiveways because they never questioned us - other pubs were a bit hit and miss.

Strangely, there seemed to be no restrictions on fags. My dad would send me down to the local shop to pick up some snout for him.

My parents threw a party for my brother's 18th at The Stanmer. I was much younger and had quite a few to drink.

At the end of the party they were talking to an organiser saying how much they enjoyed it. I told them I did too and hoped we be back there for my 18th. I remember the look on their face. They'd been serving me that evening...

I wonder if anyone did the day trip to France and knew about the illegal french bangers. Of course, we would try and smuggle them in. I was caught after placing them in my Bramley Pie box. So frustrating.

Blimey almost forgotten about them. Any school trip to France revolved around those little bangers which is memory serves me looked like tiny sticks of dynamite.

They did. My biggest humiliation is the French teacher saying that I was one pupil they expected better of. I became a 'usual suspect' at that point.

:lolol:

Something similar happened on my 18th. I was standing at the Stanmer bar, enjoying the freedom of buying drinks legally when my mate chipped in with "It's all right here, I think I'll come here on my 18th too." Fortunately, I don't think the barman heard him.

(and yes, we did go there on his 18th)

It was a nightmare trying to find out the footy results on holiday. Had to wait for a 3 day old newspaper. One miserable time was when I was on holiday at the start of the first season in the first division.
Had to wait three days to find we had lost 4-0 to Arsenal.

Old farts thread incoming. I'll kick this off.

Picking up a landline phone and making arrangements, then not having ANY method of communication with the other herbert till you actually meet up at the allotted time and place. Get increasingly pissed off when they're late and you're left hanging around wondering whether to bail.

Having the latest film reserved at the video store (VHS), yomping all the way down there to collect it, only to be told "oh...they haven't brought it back yet"

3 TV channels. Then 4. And the arrival of the 4th channel feeling like the 2nd coming of Christ.

Opening an encyclopedia if you needed to find out something.

Judging by what's been on C4 over the years, "Christ's second coming" would rate XXXX
