[Football] ITV Comentary

Anyone else think the commentary on the England v Scotland game was a complete joke?

Given that it was the National team playing the commentary was basically from the away teams point of view. The main commentator effectively gave the mike to Ally McCoist and it was all from the Scottish perspective.
Given that STV were showing the match with their own commentators who would quite rightly be seeing things from the Scottish perspective, the English broadcast should have been from the English point of view or at the very least neutral.

Even if it was a GB wide broadcast without English/Scottish variations then it should have been balanced

At one point the three commentators were just having a conversation among themselves about previous matches that they had been involved in, players haircuts etc until the supposed main one said "there's a football match going on!"

The standard of commentators across all broadcasters is woeful, but the BBC at least commentate on the actual match most of the time.

I find NBC commentary is the best for Albion games as they are much less Toxic Six cantered and actually know about both teams on the pitch

ITV are worse than the BBC at presenting and producing football matches.

England never do well when we're on ITV.

Them's the rules.

I can confirm that it was indeed dreadful. The English could well do without Ally McCoist who might well be a nice bloke, but not as a partisan football fan.

Although, when not in deranged devotion to his own team, McCoist is a very good analyst.

This.

I’m not really a TV football fan but since last year when we couldn’t attend games I got Sky Sports and BT Sport just to watch Albion games, the commentators especially on Sky talk rubbish most of the time.
I was watching one Albion game and I counted at least 10 passes before the commentators decided to get back from talking crap to actually mentioning who was actually kicking a football :annoyed:

Souness did make me chuckle, Footballs not coming home with that team :lolol:

Not sure what he meant by that. Is “coming home” supposed to mean “winning a trophy”?. Souness appeared to be looking in a mirror all night with his new teeth, fake tan and nice hair do.

Keane looked like he didn’t want to be there.

Why was Gary Neville wearing a puffa jacket under his smart jacket?

When the football is as bad as last night you have to find something else to talk about.
My only niggle is that on ITV it goes from the final whistle straight into adverts for 5 minutes.

McCoist was very good and I don't mind have partisan co-comms from both sides. But Lee Dixon was woeful - spent half the time trying to bait McCoist. And much as I dislike Tyldesley, I am not sure Matterface is any better.

I always put the radio on and listen to their commentary which is usually vastly better than what's on TV. I sync it through the hifi with a 1 second delay so it runs perfectly in line with the action on the screen. Much better in my view.

To be honest its something thats a problem across most of football commentary in England. Gone are the days of the well informed and impartial commentator, and instead its all just ex pro's who cannot hide their allegiance. I find it a really annoying aspect of watching a football game on sky/BT where fans of each team have all paid equal money for their subscription to that channel but then you have someone so clearly biased commentating. You watch the Albion vs Man United for example and you've got Gary Neville wittering on, or vs Liverpool it'll be Carragher. It's fine for the neutral, and even better if you're a United/Liverpool fan, but if you're the opposition fan in those games it feels like you're receiving a lesser product.

I didn't mind the coverage at all, and agree that McCoist was good, whereas Dixon seems to struggle to understand what's going on in the game. I'm assuming that there is no longer such a thing as ITV Scotland and, if this is the case, disagree with the OP.

How many commentators and pundits did they have last night?

Match - commentator, Dixon, McCoist
Summarisers - host, Souness, Wright, Keane
Pitch level - host, Brown, Neville

Talk about overkill.

And generally it was completely shit, overhyped rubbish.

McCoist is a breath of fresh air. And Souness is one of the better pundits. Both of them talked more sense than most.

Gary Neville is also very good, but he looked like he had the world on his shoulders. I think he needs a decent holiday for a nice rest.
Matt Upson, who is very good, would do a better job than Lee Dixon.
