I wonder if it's occurred to Johnson and co yet that all those thousands of professionals, experts and specialists that the Government employ across all their various policy teams and departments, the ones that Gove said they had enough of, Cummings tried (and in a lot of senior positions succeeded) in removing and all other Ministers were told to ignore, because the Civil Service were 'institutionally anti-Brexit' may not have been ? All those potential problems that were highlighted and then blatantly ignored in all areas.

Maybe they were just 'institutionally anti-complete cockup' ???

Genuine question about the Brexit deal

Free trade deal was what was said. I buy (a fair bit) of vinyl from the U.K. I bought 4 records last night and had to pay an extra 15% in “custom duties and taxes.”

Purchase was made through Amazon.

What’s this about and does it impact all purchases from the U.K.?

Yes. People in NI are finding they have customs duties etc on goods now. Some stores like Debenhams have said they aren’t shipping to NI now.

Amazon were warning a lot of UK-based sellers about this during the latter part of last year.

Morning,

About 7,000 frontline office workers represented by the Unison trade union accepted the energy company’s new terms last month, and 4,000 non-unionised staff also agreed to sign new contracts.

As usual it seems GMB are central to this!

And your link explains that is from a total workforce of 20,000 and the rest are now taking industrial action. Your point is

You also seem to have ignored the main point of the post (most unlike you) which is

UK workers’ rights at risk in plans to rip up EU labour market rules

Worker protections enshrined in EU law — including the 48-hour week — would be ripped up under plans being drawn up by the government as part of a post-Brexit overhaul of UK labour markets.*

The main areas of focus are on ending the 48-hour working week, tweaking the rules around rest breaks at work and not including overtime pay when calculating some holiday pay entitlements, said people familiar with the plans.

The government also wants to remove the requirement of businesses to log the detailed, daily reporting of working hours, saving an estimated £1bn.

Still, I'm sure they knew what they were voting for ???

How does this square with “free trade deal” then? Is free trade just for B2B?

Length of a working week isn't really an issue for you. Maybe you'll be able to spend longer than 48 hours a week in your bedroom highlighting bits of The Sun with a crayon.

Another clueless comment :dunce:

Don't need workers rights when everyone's been made unemployed by Brexit

According to my understanding, there is just a load of extra bureaucracy involved in UK-EU trade now. I'm not sure I'd necessarily trust how Amazon presents these things however. There's nothing worse than a private monopoly, and that's what they're becoming.

Plenty of retailers simply not taking NI orders now as it’s too expensive.
I thought we were told this was all project fear?

The explanation explicitly says its for “customs duty” as opposed to a made-up figure for extra admin....which is what I think you’re suggesting?

From 1 January 2021, you should be aware of the following changes:

Additional import charges and Value Added Tax (VAT) apply when you buy from websites in the UK (depending on the value of the items and where the product is manufactured)
EU consumer protection legislation may no longer apply, instead your consumer rights will be set down in UK law
It may be more difficult to resolve a dispute with a UK business

It's probably also worth investigating charges associated with Rules of Origin.

Overall, most of the leave voting element on here have been remarkably restrained but then again we have always held the moral high ground [emoji106]

The deal was "tariff free" trade, not frictionless, or even free, trade. VAT and taxes are not tariffs.

I'm somewhat past caring about the details now - Project Con told us that "Absolutely nobody is talking about threatening our place in the Single Market" and until that is delivered it is all just one big lie.

I don't know about amazon, but quite a number of retailers are no longer shipping to the UK because the government is requiring the retailer to collect and file VAT, at huge cost for the retailer.

A rather ridiculous example is https://www.brooksengland.com/ - saddles that are made in the midlands, but are sold out of italy, can no longer be bought in the UK.
