How do you propose we "get rid" of a British citizen, exactly? This all sounds a bit sinister.

in the current political climate i don't know , 3 years ago i would have said make treason or attacking a public officer causing bodily harm punishable by death but you could accuse some politicians of treason these days so that can't work.

That’s all well and good but you have the wrong thread I’m afraid. This thread is about Britain welcoming refugees that have arrived and are going through the system.

yes but he's right about the shingle shufflers......you have top admit it has potential to cause problems down the track .....don't be myopic about it.

Absolutely the right and decent thing to do is to welcome asylum seekers these people have had their homes bombed families killed cruelty some will have traveled by foot pushed from country to country thousands of miles welcome to our Great Country I hope you will make a good life here for the benifit of all of us.

What I find so sad is the lack of humanity from some members of our Government who decided we would take the fewest number of asylum seekers per head of capita in all of Euroupe with the exception of far right Governments of Poland and Hungrey.

I want us to spend less on weapons of mass distruction and more on overseas aid

there are not as many back handers involved in foreign aid ......which is fairly substantial btw , there is a lot of home grown poverty in the UK which is why so many people get uppitty about foreign aid.

What about Hungary and The Czech Republic, they have horrible refugee hating governments too?

Of course there are criminals that enter our country illegally and deliberately evade due process. And you’ll never stop that. These criminals traffic people in and those trafficked people need our compassion and our help. Not the likes of Das Reich screaming for them to be slung out or bombed!
This thread is about those that arrive seeking asylum and apply for it. And the people who have welcomed them.
As per, the right wingers on here have seen the word refugees and assumed it’s a safe space for then to come onto and spout their crap. It’s not for them.

Interested, bearing in mind the increasing fire power of some lively nations, how important you think our ability to defend ourselves is?

Who are we realistically defending ourselves from? Let's consider the alternatives;

Russia - obvious #1 candidate, but if we get to a point where Russia is starting a nuclear war how exactly are we going to defend ourselves from them? Or are we merely happy to be incinerating a few of them alive in some sort of death revenge scenario as we ourselves are wiped from the map? And for that matter why are they just starting it with us and not the French or Americans?

North Korea - The Don's big favourite, of course, but it seems somewhat far-fetched that they would attack us given we're almost entirely on the opposite side of the globe and by the time they'd be in a position to threaten us the US will have turned the country into a radioactive crater.

China - I can't quite grasp the plausibility of China attacking us but let's assume somehow there is a situation, at what point do we think the US is cool with this idea? Or that France thinks "nah, it'll be fine having a load of nukes going off a few miles that way".

Iran - The retro-bogeyman, the Genesis of rogue states (used to be massive, now desperately trying to stage a comeback). I'm sure Israel will just sit on their hands and let a nuclear-armed Iran dominate the Middle East to the extent it could threaten Europe, they're a famously tolerant, neighbourly state.

France - If Iran is retro-nostalgia, this is full blown costume drama territory. Yeah they're sitting over there, been quiet for too long they have. Oh sure we've not been at war with them for 200 years and we fought on the same side in the last two world wars but hey, these fishing negotiations might easily get out of control.

Germany - Well we know they wanted WMDs back in the early 1940s and although they claim a lot has changed they're still there, aren't they? Probably in cahoots with the French and all, this is why we need Brexit. Stop the German nukes at customs. That'll learn 'em.

International terrorism - I'm sure a disorganised band of individuals must be easy to nuke if you try hard enough, they probably all live in some secret hideout like the Legion of Doom or something.

India / Pakistan - Like they have their weapons pointed at anyone except each other.

This is ultimately the answer. The best way to stop people leaving poorer countries and coming to richer ones (or bombed out countries to ones which aren't bombed out) is for the richer countries to contribute more to building them up financially. It's one of the major reasons why the EU pumped so much money into eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union, to prevent them all rushing westwards at a rate of knots, something which thus far seems to have had a fair amount of success.

Now of course for some this is unpalatable. There are the valid criticisms such as "we have poor people in this country", which is true but (a) they're nowhere near as poor comparatively and (b) many of the people who make this argument would also throw their toys out of the pram at the idea of giving them more money too, and the invalid ones such as "they're all full of corruption", which rather glosses over our own current Government's antics.

It's very important to be able to defend ourselves but we have an offensive capability that far exceeds our needs we are no longer a major player in the World we have no Empire to defend, a Commonwealth that no longer looks to us and is likley to disband when the Queen passes on, we are no longer part of the EU and its future role in the world as a superpower and a UN that has not moved with the times and has been devalued by the actions of Trumps USA. What we do need though is a defensive force that is capable of defending our islands so build up the navy and Airforce a smaller army, scrap the aircraft carriers not needed after all we live on an aircraft carrier along with our nuclear weapons and increase our cyber defences.

What can I say? No danger whatsoever. A wooden stick and a whistle should ward off any potential danger.

So who are we defending ourselves from? There must be someone.
