I think people get so entrenched in their view sometimes that it is impossible for them to be objective. Solly played well last night. LWB really isn't our problem area.

I'm really surprised this warrants a thread - I thought he had a good game, looked like had confidence and did well against a very good RB in Reece James.

Maupay in a goal scoring position March blasts the ball at him, ran a lot but again the end product is sadly lacking. If only he would look up and a quick assessment before crossing and we might have a player.

It was Connolly.

Nothing wrong with blasting the ball across the box, against a keeper like Kepa.
If it had been Murray and not Connolly, he would have scored/ forced a save. IMO.

Personally I thought he played well, a tidy performance and an outlet when switching play.

Confidence will always be the issue for him as he has the ability, hopefully this is something that can be coached as he was taking people on it’s just the crossing that needs working on. Equally we need the box packed to give him more than one option In the box to aim at.

He offers more than Burn going forward which is expected as they are two different players.

Surprised how many on here believe we should have Roberto Carlos standards

Pray to god he doesn’t come on here!

I'd work out how to get young Solly to believe in himself again - I think his problem is confidence. He will often check back when he should accelerate. Fix that and he will do a lot more damage to the opposition.

Plus when did he last have a pot at goal? I seem to recall he has a decent shot on him.

He often checks back, when there is nothing happening in front of him
The Hughton era impressed on him the importance of keeping the ball at this level.
So instead of gambling and going on his own, he looks for other options.
These are invariably sideways or backwards, as unfortunately we often do not commit to an attack as much as we should.

The perception is that there is no end product from Solly.
The reality is that we rarely have more than one player in the box, when he is in a crossing position.
On the times that there are his delivery is more effective.

I'd go with "irritated" rather than "upset" but mission accomplished all the same - very well done.

And for "super fans" I'd substitute "99% of all Albion fans who prefer to be positive about our own players rather than whine like spoilt children whenever we don't win".

So very much THIS.

Solly was a huge positive last night, just needed better support from the front two.

I think he has cemented his place in the team all time we play a back three.

Yep. And it will never change.

Looking at the stats (presuming they are to be believed), Lamptey's and March's key stats are actually pretty close, and Solly had a significantly better pass completion %.

Both excellent performances. Great to see.

He 26-27 and scores on average two goals a season... in the championship.

I thought last night was probably his best performance for a couple of years. It was probably about as good as he can be and he was half the player Lamptey is. I thought the ability of our 13 year old right back would really highlight the difference between them and highlight why we need a better player at left back but it's clearly not our number 1 priority.

I still believe Bernardo is better at every aspect of the game than March is, but Potter's made his bed. March was clearly a 7/10 last night and if that becomes his standard level of performance over the course of the season then it'll be a big improvement on the previous 3 Premier League seasons.

But as a LWB that is less important now, surely

If you look at all the stats* from last night March and (the brilliant) Lamptey's are very similar. (*except Lamptey gets credited with an assist, for a five yard backwards pass - the kind that March gets castigated for, for 'checking back, not running at his man').

Why was March's performance 'as good as he can be' when he is going to be facing 16 less strong opponents in the other games, and probably 18 weaker right backs?

Why is it so very hard for some supposed Albion fans to just congratulate one of OUR players for a great performance, without dressing it up with snide digs

Indeed. The West Ham scouts would have left the Amex thinking ‘a minimum of £15m’.

By the way, he is a much much better passer of the ball than Bernardo and has much much better ability to beat players as well as deliver crosses.

I’d still like a bespoke left footed LWB like Purvis or Aït Nouri to compete with him for that spot though.

I've always liked Solly, probably because he reminds me of me when I played. Obviously, he's quite a lot better than me - but at my level I was industrious up and down the wing, defended well and often, chased back a lot, tried to take people on when I could but it didn't always work, and often didn't quite know what to do when I got to the final pass/shot. I was never substituted - and Solly is regularly picked by our managers. We don't always need flair, dependability is also very important. He doesn't let us down, and does what he does (can do) very well within his limits.

It's very hard not to like a player such as this - I bet his team-mates give him far more credit than the fans do.

You're also so keen to jump on every post about March. You have your obviously entrenched opinion, I have mine. Neither matter, in the grand scheme of things. I have absolutely nothing better to do with my life than watch the games and comment on them on this forum. It's hardly a malicious act.

I would also question your definition of the word GREAT. If that performance is great, the bar is so low it's impossible to be below it. It was a good performance, his first for quite some time. As I said, if that becomes the standard for him then he'll have had a much better season than the previous 3 but we all know what's happened before so let's all calm down and see what happens in the next game. And the next.

No, don’t, you’re being too modest

Maybe if he looked up and saw someone over 3 foot nine in the box he would cross it?
