I thought he was great on Sunday.

He was decent enough. He was also our best player in the first half at Saints. People are entitled to ignore their eyes, to save them the energy of reassessing their opinions, if they want, I guess

There’s the rub - people will see (or focus on) the things they want to see.

I always see:-

Solly in the final third, in space.
Look up.
Set himself.
Put in a woeful cross
The ball rebounds back to Solly...

...He instantly puts in a excellent cross.

I'm not seeing the same improvement Bold has, West Ham away typifies my frustration with the young lad!!

Reading the thread about next season with Lallana, it appears that the majority would not have March in the startling XI.

I guess time will tell, and Potter will have his own ideas away from the FIFA 2021 managers.

Genuinely hope that Potter has a best starting line up in his head, although this will obviously vary depending upon the opposition.

I still doubt though that March would be in his ideal starting XI.

Just my opinion, and as we all know....it's a squad game nowadays.

I want to see a winger who sets up chances. I did see two good cross field balls but other than that his crossing is on the same level as our corners.

As I said he is a good back up defender but he is not good enough as a PL winger.

I would love to re-assess my opinion. Maybe I should just accept he’s on the pitch as full back cover because he does that well and to expect nothing once he’s across the halfway line.

This is perhaps where I am then, a position such as wing-back might be ideal for him, which is where I might be seeing such strong performances such as the first half against Southampton.

As I've said before, he's a good utility squad player . . . . But has not stepped up, as we'd hoped, and I don't see him getting any better.

I didn't think Stephens was good enough for PL when we came up, but he stepped up, again, I think he's on his top step.

I hope we keep Gross, still the best dead ball/crosser in the squad, and tops our assists stats again. Despite being more of a squad player this season.

I look forward to seeing how Bissouma and Lallana work together.

The moaning about Gross' inclusion in starting XI's is quite deafening.
The moaning about set pieces and crossing in general, when he isn't playing is quite deafening.

when we come up , March was at a crossroads where it wasnt unfeasable he kicked on and pushed for a call up.

Didn't get anywhere near those levels.

Ok for a squad player and can play a few positions.

Worth keeping as not everyone can be a Lallana

+ quite liked seeing his cross field passes to Lamptey , would like to see some more of that . Some of them were delicioius

Come on, the boy's no good. He's probably safe in the squad because he keeps his head down, does nothing silly and will play anywhere he's asked. Potter likes a 3-5-2 and sees March as a wingback in that system who can cover both sides but he's a 4/10 footballer in any position he plays in. He very simply isn't very good and if we don't want to be between 15th-17th every season then we have to get rid.

And when we do, he'll drop like a stone through the leagues never to be heard of again. Like Gaetan Bong.

My dream was to see us settled in the championship.

15th - 17th is more than ok for me

If the just turned 26 lad was really no good, he wouldn't have 90 Premier League appearances under his belt having served under 2 different managers. There has been plenty of competition for his position, so your own conclusions are countered by both Chris Hughton and Graham Potter.

I seem to remember the same sort of things said about Oliver Norwood when he left us still aged 26. Perhaps he is evidence that get the right system you can improve your game even from the ripe old age of your mid 20s.

I guess our respective opinions will be answered in the coming season to some degree.

I don't think they will.

Solly March will continue to put in a shift and do a decent job in three different positions, as and when required. He'll be constantly avaiable when all the other wide players are flakey - not cry off with minor twinges, won't pick up soft petulant bookings, nor find himself on the front pages of the local paper for nonsense. Equally, he won't score more than a couple of goals, won't do any step-overs or rainbow-flicks, or roast full-backs with express pace.

Half of the posters here will be content with that, and be glad to see a decent local lad continuing to do a good job for our club. The other half will continue to dribble out spite and nonsense, simply because he isn't the player they want him to be.

six feet beneath the moon...
looking back at this thread and seeing everyone hoping he kicks on and I'm thinking "where have I hear this before?". it's what we've seen so many times before with him- yet another false dawn. seems to happen every year, one after the next. yes he's had very decent games this season, but he's also been woeful for large periods of time. that can be tolerated when you're a maverick winger, capable of pulling something truly out if the too draw once in a while, but his g/a output has been next to nothing for years now. he's a decent squad player and should probably be kept on in that capacity, but he's had more than enough time to nail down a starting spot, and I am inclined to believe that him being a 'local lad' is the only reason he's still here. but who knows, maybe under the guidance of lallana and another season under potter he'll finally prove me wrong next season. I hope he does.
