77-1, well this is going swimmingly. :lolol:

Should have bowled first, easy to say in hindsight I know but I’m not sure what they were thinking.

No need to panic here, they are looking very shaky for their 101-1, all out for 460 I reckon .

...looks like England might have picked the wrong Sussex bowler for this one

Jofra hasn’t bowled great today, he’s looked very frustrated. Both him and Wood have looked innocuous, Wood has hit 95mph but lack of pace from the pitch, as is normal in Southampton. Poor choice not to play Broad and bowl first IMO

A question for all NSC’s cricket lovers and experts, including hans kraay fan club, please:

When the weather forecast for a 5 day test is clearly:
Days 1 & 2 - wet and windy.
Days 3 to 5 - bright with much lower winds.

Why elect to bat first?

The usual reason that springs to mind, is where it’s known that it will be a spinners surface as the test evolves.

(I’ve followed England on TV only since 1977, but have flitted in and out).

Game looks to be drifting away from us. Questionable decision to bat first followed by some great Windies fast bowling (there's a surprise ) and some poor batting (there's a surprise ) and our famed fast bowling attack not delivering.

I think that pretty much nails it, it is about bowling last and theoretically we have a better/more varied attack than the Windies. Of course if the batters fail then that makes it much harder.

I thought it was a mistake, especially when we have a fairly inexperienced top 4, to bat first but the situation is not beyond repair, a lot will depend on the top order tonight/tomorrow

Jimmy Anderson Is 37 now and still our best hope of a wicket, despite all his promise, Joffra isn't the man yet, the Windies batsmen are well used to pace.

Thanks for replying.

I immediately thought of it as a mistake. Honestly, not a hindsight view, 2.5 days later. Any batting 11 imho, would face a nightmare batting in gusty, cold, damp conditions. Handing a crucial series opening win to the tourists, throwing away all the advantages of being at home and winning the toss. But I’m just an armchair layman.

Cricket mad (playing and watching) Hawksbee and Jacobs on TS, were astonished and damning.

I quite agree, and can refer you back to post #11 on this thread, before a ball had been bowled
I did almost wonder whether it was a new captain trying to impose his thinking/mentality on the team.
Having said that, if we can score 300 through tonight and tomorrow (a big 'if' I know) then we may well be in the driving seat

West Indies bowlers are bowling in such nice areas. Simply bowling better than England bowled.

Stokes doing the work of 3 men in this match, he's the only reason we're still in this.

With respect, should I refer you to the World famous old " if you win the toss bat first nine times out of ten, if in doubt, still bat first. "

Proper batting in this second innings, 1.5 runs per over ! grind the bowlers down then ramp up the scoring to 2 an over... easy game !

When should a captain make that 1 in 10 choice of sending the opposition in to bat first?
When you are Viv Richards and you have Marshall, Roberts and Holding in your team.
