Our farmers probably weren't helped by those UKIP and Brexit Party MEPs who wouldn't turn up or fight Britain's cause in the EU parliament for the last 20 years. I wonder if these farmers voted for them

Plus of course Britain wasn't helped by its original exercise in fantasy exceptionalism in the early 50s when it refused to take part in writing the rules of the EU's predecessor.

When discussing farming, do remember that the figures cited are generally the 'Farm Business Income' (see links below). This is defined as income from crops/stock, subsidies, diversification, sale of assets less costs of paid labour, fuel, overheads, repairs, rent, depreciation, phones/computers, etc. I wouldn't wish to be a farmer, and don't wish to belittle their hardships and hard way of life. But the farm income as quoted in the press is the equivalent of [part of] the 'disposable income' of the average family - basically the family income, minus the cost of the car(s), petrol, clothes for work, rent/mortgage, phone, computer, repairs to the home, and so on.

It is very odd seeing people say that 3.5 billion is not that much when it is more than twice as much as the whole fishing industry is worth. As we all know the fishing industry has been made the most relevant industry for brexit. It is absolutely bizarre that people would rather a no deal to protect a relatively tiny and insignificant industry and destroy loads of others. All very odd.


No I am not saying fishing doesn’t matter. I am saying it is relatively very very small to others.

I don’t think you need to qualify what you’re saying with the word “relatively”. It’s a tiny industry. Full stop. It makes up less than 0.5% of our industry.
Apart from a few species, we import most of our fish and seafood.

Any Ministers of experience who pointed out the potential problems kicked out the Cabinet.

And now they are after any experienced Civil Servant who is pointing out potential problems.

With the most inexperienced sycophantic Cabinet in history, going into the most intense negotiations in history. I wonder what could happen ?

I think the pre-election purge of the more decent wing of the Parliamentary party signalled that there are now no intra-party checks and balances. The huge Parliamentary majority ensured that there is not effective Opposition and the attacks on the media have further inched us towards somewhere unpleasant. That the likes of Patel and Williamson were re-instated to the Cabinet after previous sackings for serious misconduct is further evidence.
This is a foul government, led by the worst PM in living memory. If you elect (actually 'anoint' might be even better) a proven liar to the highest office in the land, then what do we expect? These are truly grim times.

The defence of Patel and open accusations of sexism in Parliament from Tory MPs yesterday were a(nother) complete stain on the government. The fact that since 2010 Theresa May (6 years) and Amber Rudd (nearly 2 years) have been in Patel's position seemed to slip their minds. Disgusting behaviour.
