What baffling logic. We try to sign a player in the summer. As do Sheffield United. He turns us both down.

In January Sheffield United have an outside chance of Europe. We don’t. Sheffield United sign him.

We now use a version of moneyball and Sheffield United are the ‘traditional route’. Any reason to moan I guess

A version of moneyball all is about right. Just the bit where your recruitment team spend modest millions on gems to polish is replaced by a recruitment team who spend modest millions on duds who get shipped out.

Right, so what does that have to do with Moneyball?

"Bloom also deploys it to recruit players for Brighton. His innovative models allow the Seagull’s scouting team to work out which players are actually performing well, and which are simply lucky. This allows Brighton a more accurate assessment of the ability of their targets, giving them an edge over rival clubs. They can pick up good players for rock-bottom prices, whilst avoiding making too many expensive mistakes in the transfer market. This analytical philosophy has drawn comparisons with Billy Beane’s ‘Moneyball’ approach in baseball."

Understood now?

In this way, we've picked up gems in Locadia, Montoya and Propper, who are now worth many times the fees paid.

Whereas as Sheff Utd and Villa lazily pay the going rate. Mugs.

Montoya and Propper were hardly overpriced.

So when we made a bid for the player in the summer but he was holding out for a bigger club it was moneyball but now somebody else has signed him because they look an outside bet for Europe it’s actually just paying the going rate.

Nope, still don’t understand. Maybe a crowbar to the head will help me understand it. It’s obviously worked wonders for you.

No, no, no. All of our signings have been massively overpriced flops.

Whilst Sheffield United & Villa have a spotless record with the likes of McBurnie, Robinson, Freeman, Osborn, Wesley & Engles proving excellent additions.

Sometimes I wonder if these people are for real or just on a permanent wind up.

It's about the here and now.

Sheff Utd willing to spend big in January.

Brighton adopting a different strategy.

I doubt either Board are analysing summer 2019 moves that never happened.

So we have a situation atm where the club, players, fans and manager are saying the atmosphere is poor at home games.

How much better do they think it will get between now and the end of the season with being linked to no one and making zero comment [yet] about our transfer window? It’s only going to get worse.

We’ve had spurious comment from Potter about it’s his job to focus on improving the players he has in the squad and the square root of FA from anywhere else.

If they were to summarise their belief in the squad or even say we were prepared to strengthen the squad in areas GP deemed necessary but we aren’t prepared to gamble the future of the club on ludicrous fees or wage demands it might, just might galvanise some kind of positive response from fans about all being in it together...

Silence when there is some not entirely unjustified disgruntlement from the fans is only going to enhance the fear and pervasive hesitant atmosphere.

I’m not asking for a list of targets for each position and the associated bids lodged simply something a little bit more than radio silence altogether which I think is counterproductive.

What if Gary Nelson was right and it's better to be a lucky player than a good one. We're doomed!

If he is soooo amazing I'm surprised he was able to be signed by Sheffield United. I'm not comparing them to us, but another 10 or so teams in the premier league who would have been better placed perhaps.

But maybe once again it shows how doing the groundwork gets you the player eventually. We can see back on the first page of this thread that Sheffield were after him when they were in the championship, they've done the groundwork and its paid off. Fair enough. We did exactly the same with Mooy, Jahanbakhsh, Andone, were involved with them a long time before they actually signed.

But well done to them, I hope he does well. I have nothing but admiration for what Sheffield are doing.

Of course if you want another view on why Sheffield United are able to sign this player, then this line from the BBC report might be telling

"Sheffield United said owner Prince Abdullah took a "personal interest" in the signing and was "instrumental in the negotiations"."

Perhaps our next signing should be the Sheff Utd recruitment team.

.. or their owner?

With Abdullah’s limitless wealth, I wonder if they’re going to do a Wolves and sign further ‘names’?

With the Saudi state’s Public Investment Fund taking over NUFC, there’s some serious investment being made in the PL.

Feel free to provide quotes for the atmosphere thing as Potter hasn’t said that (sensationalist headline it was), I’m unaware of the club saying anything of the sort, the fans is a proportion saying it so that’s not true and as for the players - again please provide me the quotes...? I’ll expect a good 6 quotes from players saying the atmosphere at the Amex is poor to justify you grouping them all together FYI....

As I think you’ve made that all up tbh and exaggerated. Just saying, I like to go with facts...

Do agree with the sentiment of your post but the first part is nonsense and lies with all due respect.
