I totally agree with every word.
Firstly I am tired of thoughts and prayers and we must learn from this.
Secondly how difficult would it be to put agents from this country but of the same ethnicity as the refugees behind the lines and catch the traffickers, this could be a Europe wide operation in conjunction with other EU countries and winkle the buggers out.
I fear this news will disappear until the next time, after all plenty have died in dinghy's before today.

What are you offering as a salary for a job that would result in immediate death if you are uncovered? Does it come with compensation for dependents etc if so?

So we allow them to carry on with their trade, somehow they have to be stopped, I was just venting my thoughts, have you any ideas how we can stop these traffickers doing what they do?

We hear about the grave attempts. It accommodates TV & Tabloid headlines without too much research. Hundreds more each day sent packing from foreign ports having been found out..only to try again

It's worth clarifying the difference between an asylum seeker and those who have been trafficked into slavery, whether it be in a life of debt and control, manipulated hard work, sex work etc.

Asylum seekers may simply claim asylum or pay a fee for some help to get here and find a job & some freedom this side undetected.

The trafficked remain under the control of those who imported them. The two can obviously merge under false pretences or if sold a lie but I'm confused by some people's use of the terms on here

But I'd think unlikely these poor souls were trafficked or that the driver knew. I'd certainly hope he didn't connect and switch on his refrigerated unit if he did know ( if he did)

But the press will carry on. Difficult to see a government policy or agreement with other nations that will put an end to this.

I do hope our Government and authorities will get to the very bottom of how this occured

Yep I was uncomfortable with BBC news tonight. They named the driver and broadcast a picture of him, from I assume from Social Media. I've just read a report in the Daily Telegraph that he reported it the police himself and it is "unlikely" he knew what he was carrying.

I really didn't need to see the lorry being driven with the dead bodies inside either and people taking pictures.

However, in the top of the frame was a police officer, standing still with head bowed in respect as the lorry drove past. I wished the news had taken his lead.

I've been wondering all day how the crime was uncovered, and it seemed most likely that the driver was instrumental in that. if so he could be either consumed with remorse at what he has been a party to, or horrified at what he has been an unwitting contributor to.

In either case, I think it is awful that they have revealed who they believe him to be at this stage,

I reckon it's probably rife. Maybe even the tip of the Iceberg.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...grants-alive-lorry-travelling-M20-London.html

Nine suspected migrants are found alive in back of lorry travelling on M20 towards London

Kent Police were alerted at 3.40pm to suspected migrants in a truck on the M20
Officers closed the two northbound carriageways of the M20 causing delays
Paramedics treated the nine people at the scene who all survived their ordeal
Earlier today the bodies of 39 suspected migrants were found in a truck in Essex

BBC website now has helicopter/drone footage from above the lorry, why is that necessary and what does it add to the "news" element of the story?

The only solution is, naively, if everybody everywhere got on with each other nicely regardless of race/colour/religion/ethnicity/gender orientation. I am sure if I was an ordinary law abiding hard working family "person in the street" living in one of the seemingly batshit crazy countries in that unfortunate part of the world I would be pretty desperate to get out.

Not sure now is the time to be second guessing transport routes around Europe, let alone wondering what the driver should or shouldn't have done.

i think it shows that some heartless ******* has cleaned up at the expense of those poor people ....a week to 10 days in a sealed container , jesus christ , that is a brutal thing to put someone through.

I don’t see the point in naming someone arrested of any crime.

Even if it’s not high profile or relatively minor, it’s still embarrassing and potentially awkward with your employer and family. The fact is, at that point they are innocent and should have the right to keep it secret

If they are charged and going to court the a compromise has to be made as justice has to be carried out openly and witnesses need to be sought etc.

I just don’t what can be gained by naming someone at arrest stage apart from to provide salacious tabloid gossip.

Brighton / Hove actually
Curious to know at which part of the journey they died. I would imagine that there would have been some sort of panic and noise at some stage with people desperate to get out. They may have died before they had even got on the ferry but there is also a report saying that the driver phoned the emergency services. My only question is what made him suspicious if this is true.

Apparently the container came from Zeebrugge, the driver picked up the trailer at the port (it was his cab that entered the country via Holyhead, not the container) and drove to an industrial estate as he wanted to check the paperwork which was in the container. It was then that he found the bodies and phoned the ambulance service. We will see, but I have my doubts that he knew anything about it.

The driver has been released without charge. It was shown he had only picked up the container 35 minutes previously.

The press has caused this man and his family a lot of grief besides the awful shock he must have felt w hen the discovery was made.

You'd think the press might learn from that bloke in Bristol + Cliff Richard case... but evidently not. Unfortunately the press are untouchable in this country.

Not wanting to imply anything but according to news sites I have seen the Police have been granted a further 24 hours to interview the guy. I so wish his details were not in the public arena.

Yes, I've heard further news bulletins since the earlier one. It's puzzling.

I can’t see this reported anywhere, but I have seen reports that back up the above in that he had only been in possession of the vehicle a very short time, reported the incident himself and passed out on discovering the bodies.

It’s not time for speculation, and the truth will eventually come out, but I recall the case of Rebecca Leighton, who wrongly had the murders of several patients at Stepping Hill hospital pinned on her before eventually being released without charge. By that time though she’d had every inch of her private life dug up and her character assasinated by the press.

It must be incredibly distressing for those falsely caught up in such cases, along with their families.

So 39 illegal immigrants are dead. Gotta say I`m not as distraught as most seem to be.

There’s a bit of faux pain going on I’m sure but gotta feel compassion. 39 dead in horrific circumstances and some kingpin profiting from such an evil trade is sickening. Not shocking though. We’re becoming a bit desensitised to these instances given their regularity.
