Reputation. It’s all about the English reputation.

For years our young went around Europe causing mayhem in so far as our own government has to ban english football from Europe. Every local “ firm” want a go at english fans as it appears that we are the ones that are up for it....we have english fans singing “ no surrender songs” ...why?

We were always known as the country that exported its hooligan problem.

Some have come on here moaning about the local police..what the f do you expect? Do you really think that if a load of Dutch fans came over to London and started to smash up pubs and attacking people , the riot police wouldn’t step in? Of course that wouldn’t happen as most away fans know not to get pissed out of their brains and to want to fight...and lo now we have english football clubs hooligans fighting between themselves...for duck sake....english fans fighting each other!

No one condones the behaviour of Bulgarian fans, far from it. However this racism card is now widely used across Europe as most teams we play have these racist fans...and it seems to be getting worse that better...lets face it, a life long Brighton fan who I see at every game was carted off at the Tottenham game and we have all heard racist comments at games.

Of course the usual subjects on here will say it’s just bantz, but of course we all know it isn’t! I hate to say it but to bring it back to the favourite subject, brexit and trump has enflamed this behaviour! Xenophobia is alive and kicking and all over the world at the moment

England fans display more flags in foreign lands than any other countries fans. It is tribal and appears like an invading army marking out their territory.
If hundreds of another nations flags appeared throughout my town I would find it very disrespectful.
I understand why local people and authorities in many cities confront the English fans.
I've been to many international tournaments and the games that mainly involve major policing are the England games.

I can honestly say I have not heard racist comments uttered, let alone shouted or chanted, for many years at a Brighton game.

I recall the game at Withdean when Prosser, a mixed race Referee awarded 2 late penalties to Sheffield United, I think Carl Asaba, a black player had gained both of them, and fans, including me, were going ballistic at Prosser as both looked clear dives. He claimed racist abuse was used towards him, but absolutely no one else on the pitch, which included several black players, nor anyone on the sidelines backed him up when the Police and FA investigated, and I certainly didn't hear any. Plenty of "Cheating ****", but no racial insults. I am sure we have some fans with racist tendencies, but the most obvious one on NSC does not attend matches these days, thankfully.

That Prosser game was the only time I genuinely suspected a Ref had taken a bribe.

Go away with England and you will see Police targeting innocents for just being outside in a group. You are pretty much saying English deserve it for attacking people and smashing up pubs . .. . that simply doesn't happen . Been following England away for 20 years and you are ridiculously wide of the mark.

Pretty clueless post mate , sort of thing I'd expect from someone hyped up by the medias agenda.

Different story if you actually follow England away.

Wasting your time mate. The court of NSC opinion has already decided that all England fans are racist neo nazi hooligans intent on smashing up europe. Of course most of the people saying that have never left middle class village life much less been to an England game. I've seen loads of trouble following England just little or none in the last 20 years or so. I've also seen plenty of trouble following the Albion, perhaps they should be banned too?

In the past I did follow england away, I have done my games long before the england travel club etc. I have done the World Cup in France and Italy. And to suggest I get hyped up is pretty insulting really!

I am in no way saying england expect it, I am suggestion our reputation encourages it. I was in Luxembourg late 70’s early eighties and the vast majority of england “ fans” were not there for the football. The amount of lads who came home with brand new trainers and casuals gear was comical if it wasn’t so sad. It was the days when people boarded up th in shops when england was in town! And yes I saw that in Turin!

I do know people who go away with england like mark R etc and they are obviously not there for trouble, but to suggest that there is not an element that follow england is being disingenuous to the majority of fair minded fans who go to for the football and the “craic”

Exactly as I predicted in my post directly above yours. The Police, often para military, in these countries love an England visit nearly as much as the local Ultras. They literally have a licence to baton, stab, arrest and even murder without fear of any sort of retribution. It’s happened again and again and again over the decades. England’s reputation was formed in the 70s and many foreign authorities still respond like they are too.

Yeh, mate, that is sort of bollocks isn't it

Alright ... too much crap on this thread. It starts with me because was saying England fans should be banned from travelling. After a sleep, and after watching some seriously out of order Bulgaria fans, I clearly went too far. On the other side, I still think there's too much police blaming. Yes, they are too heavy handed in some places, but if we just went to places and acted in a civilised way, rather than the boorish, we're British we'll do what we like attitude (which many still have), we wouldn't, in time, be getting these massive police presences.

So there has to be a middle ground. There are simple things you can do, One example is to schedule games more sensibly. Prague on a Friday night screams "piss up". The talk of some self policing amongst the fans in encouraging and this needs to continue as this is the answer. If I stepped out of line watching England play rugby away, I'd be dragged back into line much quicker that if I was watching football.

Another couple of points

The sense I get is that a changing drug culture in football is playing a strong part in the increase of football disorder
I also get the impression that the political situation isn't helping. Huge sections of young blokes are getting fed a daily diet of nationalism and anti-Europeanism in the press and their politicians are routinely usually the inflammatory language of war, surrenders, traitors etc. This can't not seep through to people

Nothing wrong with the flags but English away fans exhibit the behaviour of exceptionalism, a nationalism that thinks we rule the world and are widely superior. Can't we just we patriotic like most other nations?

Suffice to say, this attitude has lead us to where the country is now.

An English man with exactly the same name has robbed a bank (or something similar) the previous year and legged it out the country before they could catch him.

The police came and whisked this poor bloke off from the hotel. He missed the game.

:lolol:

True story.

I knew somebody who had a similar experience. A former work colleague had problems entering the US twice due to sharing an identical name with a long time wanted fugitive who had a serious rap sheet. Twice he was hauled off for secondary interrogation. Despite the fact he was British, much older and didn't bear the slightest resemblance to the wanted crook. The Immigration inspectors were aware of this but had to 'follow procedure' apparently.

I expect to not get charged, battoned or treated like an animal for standing still doing absolutely nothing - just what should I expect? Should I not expect basic human rights?

Do you really think that if a load of Dutch fans came over to London and started to smash up pubs and attacking people , the riot police wouldn’t step in?
No, I’d expect the riot police to step in on the individuals causing havoc wherever and from whatever nation - what has this got to do with England fans in Holland? Are you suggesting pubs were smashed up over there and people were attacked?! They weren’t - that’s literally been made up in your head from someone who wasn’t there. Based on media reports from the 80s it seems.

Of course that wouldn’t happen as most away fans know not to get pissed out of their brains and to want to fight...and lo now we have english football clubs hooligans fighting between themselves...for duck sake....english fans fighting each other!
And the very very very vast majority of England / Brighton / Hull City etc away fans don’t get pissed out of their brains and fight? The example I have was 2 or 3 out of 10,000 and about 1,500 were there behaving and many telling them to stop. Your post is absolute nonsense and based on zero fact and no first hand view. You are the media’s wet dream for believing the bollocks they exaggerate. I think you’ve made this post to be deliberately inflammatory and quite frankly, you’re talking out your arse.

I’ve answered this nonsense guesswork in bold :)

Hadn’t even read your post but answered it very similarly. Follow England away!

I've been living in a few countries that have hosted England. The vast minority are fine but there always seems to be a largish minority that are just *****.

I was out there for the Sofia Half Marathon. Vitosha Boulevard was full of drinking fans for the 48 hours I was staying round the corner. A few still going at 8:30am as I set off to the start. Grannies, kids, old ****s like me and shoppers just walked around enjoying the beautiful October day. A lot better than West Street but didn’t make me proud to be English.
