[Albion] Potter on why he played a young team

Three is not a majority, the team selection last night was arrogant and disrespectful imo. We haven’t won at home for so long that to play a team that had no chance of winning was fleecing the paying customers, none of whom expected us to throw the game before a ball was kicked.

I doubt we’d have sold 1000 tickets if the fans knew we would be playing a team who had virtually no chance against a strong Premier League team.

Look forward to seeing the FA cup crowd if we get a home game

Icy, you're not turning on the new manager already!? We're not even out of September!

I went to the game and it felt like a Check a Trade cup game with that line-up !
At the time I felt mugged off for paying £15 to watch the kids knowing we were going to get beat before a ball had been kicked.
Now i’m just reflecting on how threadbare and fragile our squad seems to be right now if Potter’s hand was forced which is a concern
I only took 2 positives from that experience:
1. The performance of Haydon Roberts - definitely the next Dunk to come through the ranks. He may even find himself on the bench against Chelsea now seeing that Duffy, Bernardo and Balogun are all injured !
2. I got 15 loyalty points towards future away trips to watch the real first team !

As a side issue, I wonder if the club will get any grief from the EFL for not fielding a competitive team ? After all, I recall Wolves getting into hot water about fielding a weakened team in the FA Cup a few years ago.

Anyone who uses the word 'gotten' who isn't American is immediately discredited.

I have used the word gotten before but that is usually after hearing my American work colleagues and my cousins use it.

Have you gotten that straight, mate?

Absolutely not, I have enjoyed the way we are trying to play. I can be pissed off by a team selection without being accused of turning against the manager, surely? His football philosophy is spot on to me and I’d like to think I won’t turn on him even if we go down as long as the players still believe.

Okay - now, since 90% of the people here are complaining about last nights lineup, I'd like the experts in here to clarify some questions:

There is only one question I would ask these folk, why are you not coaching a PL team? And a supplementary question would be - If you are so much better than TB at managing a business, supporting a football team, and providing a vision and pathway to an even better future, why have you not backed yourself by buying the club and taking it to the dizzying heights that you are so capable of.

In pub before we said I bet neither of us could name at least 5 players in the team. I got 4. No huge surprise to me.

I enjoyed the game and don't begrudge the money spent.

Well, I'm putting this post from another thread here too as I kind of like it...

It's all very well getting annoyed, but Potter was appointed for the future of the football club, not instant gratification of supporters. This might be the first step to a much more productive Academy system with first team ready players being delivered. The Academy just had a seismic charge ripple through every age group at how a chance for first team football has suddenly overnight dramatically increased.

Spurs, West Ham, Sheff Utd all went out to opposition at least 2 tiers below, with ManUtd needing pens at home. Meanwhile we take on a fairly strong Villa side with our kids, and suddenly we have a much better picture of who may well make it from the development squad. "You don't win anything with kids!"....right?

You could look at it as throwing a game if you're that way in kind. Or you could look at it as a window into the future of how a Potter led Brighton will look. A kid who only 2 years ago was sitting his GCSEs at Hove Park School scored on debut. Wow, you know, that's a bit of a fairytale in itself.

I'm glad someone has a bit of perspective.

Absolutely not....’arrogant and disrespectful’ is strong criticism of the selection of a person who supposedly has your support? Is his selection not worthy of your trust and respect toward a bigger picture?

Don't ever totally surrender. You can be flippant about the contest but without being arrogant about it. This wouldn't have happened in years gone by.

True story. Brighton fielded a much stronger team in 18/19, 17/18, 16/17 - and lost in round 2/3/3, scoring an average of 0,3 goals per game going out.

I'm sure the people paying £15 went home with a smile on their face - "son, we may have lost today - but at least we got to see Suttner, Jahanbakhsh and Locadia".

'Gotten' was originally as common in Britain as it is now in the USA but died out and now only survives in a few cases such as 'forgotten' and 'ill-gotten' - a shame, as is the disappearance of any useful usage. So anyone using 'gotten' could just be getting medieval.

O/T. Indeed. There are quite a few English words that the Americans have kept alive and are now deemed to be 'American' because they've fallen out of use in Britain.. The verb 'to skedaddle' is one, and 'Fall' for Autumn. And of course a lot of people think 'soccer' is an American term.

Only if the bigger picture means only competing in the Premier League. I know where we stand on cup competitions now. He has my support but that does not mean he is some sort of footballing Messiah who is perfect in every way. Yeah I do feel quite strongly about that team selection, we have another International break coming up and the two games before it are free hits that we are unlikely to win, so to play a midfield and forward line without any first choice players at all means we threw the game imo.

So that is quite a reasonable argument, whereas ‘arrogant and disrespectful’ goes a lot further in my opinion. Maybe he made a mistake, misjudged it, called it wrong etc but I fail to see how arrogance comes into it, Potter doesn’t strike me as someone you’d call arrogant?

Just hope we get something from the Chelsea game otherwise there will loads on here saying that playing the kids the other night to keep the first team players fresh for Saturday, will have backfired big time.

Understood why he played the team he did but I would have gone the whole hog and played the entire U23 team and avoided using Bong, Duffy, and Button too.

Point taken, an over reaction to my disappointment at the team selection.

How I feel.
Though even in my house we are split on this....

I did enjoy watching the U23s, but there was no chance we’d beat a strong Villa team.

Think some of the first team need game time Bissouma, Mooy to name two, would suggest Schelotto could have been given the opportunity for 45 mins (if he was up to it).
