I can only find an Andy Naylor tweet saying both he and Balogan came back from international duties with injurys (did not say what).

But then wasn't Ali J on the bench away to city that was after this.

What injury is he suffering with?

About 4-5 minutes in Potter only talks about new injury's Maupay- cut leg and Murray - rolled ankle.

He then says all the others injurys the same as before, I would need to find Chailey Jims injury thread to find out what injury he picked up playing for Iran.

In the Argus on Saturday it was reported:-

Potter told The Argus: "Alireza felt uncomfortable in his thigh. He reported it in the international break and came back with a bit of uncomfortable feeling. He shouldn't be too far away but he obviously misses the [Newcastle] game."

I don’t think we would have thought it at the start of the season, but I suppose, Solly March and Alzate are first and second replacements for Montoya at RWB, and third Schellotto, probably still a month away from realistically starting in the Premier League.

That’s an argument to say we can risk Montoya in this game, especially as there are probably many who would say that Solly and Alzate should be our first choice wing backs.

However moving Solly to RWB in the league would mean finding a LWB. Bernardo if he’s fit, Alzate has probably leapt into second place, but after that then Bong or Burn.

I can see it both ways with choosing Montoya

On one hand, a win would be important to the self-confidence and give fringe players more opportunities to play at a decent level.

On the other hand, Brighton does not have the squad to compete in "unenecessary" competitions like this.

On one hand, with a lot players injured you dont have many alternatives and might have to pick a stronger team than you'd optimally want to have a chance of getting a result, so maybe Potter should go with that.

On the other hand, Villa are more desperate for any kind of win in any competition, so if you field a strong team you not only risk getting your players tired; you also risk getting more injuries.

Not easy. Tricky game.

He felt something wrong with his thigh. Hmm. Not convinced this is a real injury, or it’s a fig leaf to cover up some behind the scenes disagreement.

If it is real injury, it’s terrible timing for him.

We have about 6 attacking players injured and 3 on loan, so what a chance it would have been for him to play a few games and rebuild his reputation. After the international break we’ll most likely have 3 or 4 or our injured attacking players back and there’s every chance Connolly and Alzate will have enhanced their claim to a place. Getting in then will be much more difficult

Would be fun to see Peter Gwargis, he did really well in a pretty bad team in the Swedish second division before he moved to Brighton last summer. Thought he was very exciting to watch in Jönköping, monstrous left foot and great vision but very light-weight last time I saw him.

Brighton are involved in three senior competitions. This is the one in which we have the greatest chance of achieving something more than just being in it again next year.

A handful of players might well be kept out for higher priorities, but there is no reason not to field a side capable of winning this game.

Would be fun to see Peter Gwargis, he did really well in a pretty bad team in the Swedish second division before he moved to Brighton last summer. Thought he was very exciting to watch in Jönköping, monstrous left foot and great vision but very light-weight last time I saw him.

He looks fairly decent, without ever standing out. There are a few U23s more likely than him to progress to our first team. Suspect he’ll stay with our U23s this season then a loan abroad next, following the likes of Dreyer and Ostigard.

It isn't for a visiting Swansea / Potter fan to decide which competitions are 'unnecessary'.

Neither is it for you to decide unless you are Graham Potter or Tony Bloom.

I know GP loves the FA Cup and will put much effort and a high quality side in it, but whether he finds the League Cup all that important at this stage after some bad luck in the league and a lot of injuries is more questionable - and I think I would find that questionable even if I had been a Brighton fan since birth.

So Swansman, when GP was with you what was his approach to the noddy compet … I mean the Carabao cup, did he seem to care when you were eliminated? Did he take a chance with player selection?
