A plea to Hughton - Bruno

Are you ever going to stop going on about this? It's completely different. Here we have only one fit centre back (although as it turns out Goldson will hopefully be fit on Friday so not for long).

Hughton said this last night post Derby about Goldson

BBC: Will he be available for Forest ?
Hughton: “We’re trying. At this moment we’ve a game on Tuesday v Colchester, we’re trying the best we can and if does make it then that will be a real big boost for us”

Goldson said this in a tweet yesterday afternoon when asked when he'll be back.

Hughton again confirmed in his post match presser that they were looking to bring in both a CB and a striker in the transfer window.

To me, getting away with it suggested we were lucky. Which is wrong. We defended well, even when Martin came on who people would say made the difference. Forest were on fire against Burton, a team playing their first Championship game and favourites to be relegated. It's a bit different to playing a team who came third last season. If Bruno needs to play on Friday, then so be it. Ideally we have Goldson back or a new signing but if Bruno has to play, then we have to deal with it.

... but we were lucky... that we didn't concede...

I agree this is a place to discuss football tactics. What I find irritating is people who seem to think they know better than Hughton and some on this thread are quite like that. With Hyppia, fair enough. With a manager who got us to third place last season, which nobody expected it is a bit ridiculous. The OP making a plea to Hughton to not play Bruno is an example of what annoys me.

So you don't like his choice of language basically. It just annoys me when people say we shouldn't question the manager. Firstly, even Hughton gets it wrong sometimes, but more importantly this is a football discussion board. If someone doesn't like people discussing football, this probably isn't the place for them. Mumsnet is available

Just thought this needed bouncing again,

2 games, no goals conceded

Nuff said

Quite so. "He may have fluked it away to a nothing team like Derby County, but if we have to play him at CB against a proper team like Forest, we're stuffed."

Please please Chris don't start Bruno in central defence today. It is a completely unnatural position for him and we lose all his creativity down the right hand side which was key in so many games last year. I'd rather start Hall there who has a bit of Scottish Premiership experience or look at other alternatives than waste Bruno's talent.

It was a nervy start for sure but I thought the back 4 looked better as the game went on. At 35 he may have to move into the middle as he will start to lose pace.....

Bruno did very well but clearly unnatural there & miss him at RB linking with Knocky. Rosenior better at LB than Bong. We looked a bit out of position / shakey tonight - let's not let the result gloss over things. Dunk immense:)

Bong is now the weaklink but showed the value of a left footer on the left. Simple cross, simple tap in - lovely football.

Bruno at centre back is class. Likes a tackle, gets up well and had positional sense many playing that position fulltime never learn. The man is just quality through and through.

Agree with this. He also has such an exceptionally good first touch he is able to set up a move where another CB might simply clear upfield. Remember one incident last night when the ball came down with snow on it from a goal kick (I think) and he took it on the shoulder, turning as he did so to direct the ball square. Think most CBs would have simply headed it back. The guy is absolute class.

Agree, though thought Bong did a lot better last evening.

.. and to think a couple of years ago I thought his time was up! He has found himself a new lease of life under Hughton and his level has been consistently high over the last year. He's been amazing since we signed him (cheers Gus) but he's never been this excellent this consistently. He looks in peak physical condition as well, what a hero.

I agree - Rosenior is a far better player than Bong, even at left back but he always prefers to play Liam on the right because it is more natural for him. Bong plays better with Murphy ahead of him than Skalak. Although Skalaks' delivery is better than Murphy, he loses the ball a lot more than Murphy does. There is no player who has a Monopoly and does everything better than another in every aspect of play.

I disagree though on Bruno. I think he brings a calmness to the central defensive positions and I think that Lewis Dunk will be a better player and less likely to do rash things playing alongside Bruno. He also covers for any positional ''Faux Pas'' better from a central position than he could do playing at full back, so I like him at Centre Back

There isn't really a perfect side for any and every match but I think Chris knows what the appropriate team for each match so I think we just trust him to make the right choice for each match as it comes up.

And there we all were worrying about Bruno playing centre of defence. The bloke is just bloody amazing!!

Mind you, I do miss him bombing up and down the right hand side.

The real question is who will miss out once Goldson is fit?

Rosenior unfortunately. I'd be surprised if we leave Bruno at CB longer than we have to. We do look slightly less potent without him on the right. I'm not certain we need another CB signing anymore now though.
