[Albion] Daily Mail reporting Albion have rejected £4m from Burnley for Dale Stephens

This really winds me up when I see this quoted, OK their career may be about a quarter of the average working Joe, but there salary is probably 8 times as much. Is that not a decent Payday?

Average championship salary is around £480k p/a
Average UK salary is somewhere around £30k p/a

The weird thing about that, frankly ludicrous quote, is that a football player can always do something else when they stop being a football player. They actually have many more options than other people whose skills become redundant. I think I'd trade my lifetime of work for half a dozen years earning footballer money. It would be all the sweeter since I'm quite crap at football.

Player salary numbers are from PFA figures to 200n9-2010 (£211k), inflated by 15% each year to 2016 to reflect wage increases. UK wage I basically made up.

EDIT: Daily Mail say average championship salary last season was £324k, so they are much worse off than I suspected. Poor dears. :)

Have Burnley not jus signed the Icelandic midfilder of Charlton for 2.5 M ?

Thats not to say they are not interested in Dale still.

God no. We can do better than that as we're not looking to sell them.

The point is "Do THEY or their agents want to go?" No point in battling to keep a disaffected player as Albion and other tams have learned over the years.

If Stephens has only a year left on his contract you could spend the whole of next season with a man who wants out, particularly in the January window.

What's it got to do with a Palace fan?

I think that's it in a nut shell. I know for a fact that dale wants Premier League football (obvious point) but my understanding is that he wants more than just a relegation dog fight. Burnley may not be in one this season but the current expectation is that they will.

So - does he wants to go because it is the Prem and he may get the Sidwell effect of the club struggling but him being snapped up by an established side. Or does he wait for other offers to come in, or wait to get there with us.

Either way, if we do not get promoted this season I expect he will not be around for the 17/18 season

I say sell him, he's most likely had his head turned errrmmm I mean wallet turned by the mighty Premier League behemoths Burnley. If he was my player I'd ask him straight and anything less than: "I love it here boss, this is MY club and I'm staying until I retire etc. and so on..." then he'd be on platform 1 for ginger whippet land in less time than it takes to say "Yes, yes a deal can be done at £5 million Mr Dyche, did I ever say I love ginger people and intend to drive Mr Stephen's up personally to sign whenever the ridiculous modern blight that is 'paperwork' can be drafted, re -drafted, ratified and filed in triplicate... sigh... what say you?"

"I say yes..." gruffly.

He's gone.

You're presuming we won't struggle! Very few players care which club they play for, kiss my badge.

I like that bit about Barnes.

Aye let him go, if indeed he wants to. I suspect he does you know...

It's starting to look like an Ince and JFC/Holla midfield for the Derby game... heh heh.

With Hambo or Harper up top with Murray.

Heh heh...hilarious... could happen though.

Of course the situation would be helped if the Albion brought in a big signing now as statement of intent, to not just the fans but the players too.

I realise that it isn't easy for a club like the Albion to do that but for a club like Newcastle who can you can almost see them slipping into the Championship driver's seat with one hand on the ignition.

Shite I forgot about Elvis! Phew - he can play off Glenn. When I say off, I mean offside, naturally. ahem.

Elvis Manu - Now IS your time for your very own comeback special. I'd lose the leather pants though dude.

Totally agree.

I was thinking about that signing, you know, that Vicente moment. We're never ever going to get that feeling (at this level) again are we?

The best we can hope, a second division (Spain) import.

Oh to reforge 'the dagger'... weep, weep.

Part of me wishes we'd never signed Vicente in the first place. The fact we were able to bring in a player of that quality has given me a permanent irrational hope that we can do it again and it has clouded every transfer window ever since.
