Amazing isn't it? You don't have to spend pots of money to be successful.

Barnes came to "the shithole" in January when promotion was far from certain. I sincerely doubt he is on much more, if at all, than he was with Brighton.

So clearly things like this are taken into account, which is why we have 2 of your better players from the last few seasons and you have none of ours.

Burnley is certainly steeped in something ,and my friend the first thing that springs to mind is not footbaling history , i honestly hope Burnley do well this season and turn over a few big teams but to have the notion in your head that players chose Burnley over Brighton or anybody else for tradition rather than dosh is utter tosh .

Hi all.

I'm a Burnley fan, and I felt compelled to register and talk about Stephen Ward in light of some silly comments ive read over time on here.

I noticed that many posters on this forum have been very uncomplimentary towards Ward & even Barnes, for their decision to choose Burnley over Brighton. My question is why?

Brighton now have a lovely fresh stadium. It is admittedly impressive, but no more so than any of the other recently erected new build stadia that we've seen in recent years.

This stadium, and the chance to play at it, seems to be the main reason why posters here think the aforementioned players should have chosen Brighton over Burnley.

Unfortunately, I'm here to tell you that there are quite a number of reasons why a player would choose Burnley over Brighton.

Firstly, Burnley are a club that has woven strands into the fabric of English football. We are a founding member, multiple title winning team that has spent the majority of it's existence in the upper echelons of the Football League.

Brighton can boast none of this, and has spent most of its existence scratching around in the lower leagues.

In recent history, Burnley have shown ambition, have spent more time challenging at the right end of the championship, have shown a real aptitude for bringing through and developing talent and have tasted the success that Brighton aspire to. We play bright, attacking football too.

Whereas Brighton, the nouveau rich, have spent plenty of money and consistently failed at the final hurdle. It's often been pointed out how cynical, dour, and downright dirty some of the football has been also.

Finally, Burnley may not have a shiny new stadium, but what it does have in Turf Moor, is a stadium steeped in history, dignity and respect.

It reflects badly on many of you that you are unable to weigh up such reasons before concluding that the likes of Ward & Barnes are idiots for choosing Burnley over you.

Enjoy your season.

Can't disagree with any of that. Although didn't we sell you Barnes which in my eyes was a good bit of business from us. Never had a problem with the lad myself but allot of people down here did so would never have pulled up any trees down here.

As for Ward it was all done and dusted and you gasumped us last minute. Can't blame Ward for wanting to play the first division over the second division. Shame for us but I've got no bad feeling towards the player that is football after all. Currently you are higher than us in the football food chain.

I can see Barnes and Ward sitting there now discussing this with their wives.
" Darling, Burnley have offered me a contract, so have Brighton, but I'm just torn dear, because Burnley are so steeped in history and were founding members of the football league , have won multiple titles and are just SOOO ohhhh ya know !!

Wife : Have Burnley offered you more cash ?
Ward and Barnes : Why yes wife they have
Wife : **** it love were moving up North.

Northern Muppet !!!!

I agree with the opening poster. Ward and Barnes opted for Burnley so they can admire the trophy cabinet and read about the illustrious history of Burnley, when snuggled up in bed after a long days training.

I would love Barnes back now but he was never popular here with a lot of fans and left for that reason. No mystery in that.

Ward went for Premier League football and more money (despite what you might claim).

To be honest, you come across as more arrogant than most of our fans and completely pathetic. Is there nothing better to do in Burnley on a Sunday than come on to opposing team's forums and try to wind up their fans?

Title thread seems to be contradictory, you are saying (on another teamd forum)you are better and "woven into the fabric of football"etc which stinks of arrogance and entitlement, also Ashley Barnes was regularly slagged off on here long before he wentto Burnley and as for ward he wanted more money which was the 1st stumbling block of him joining us months ago,Burnley agreed to pay him more than us, end of.

We are NOT Noveau Riche cause we ain't riche!

Wigans prolonged spell in the Premiership is another example of why Ward went to you - it's all about the money! Not the club, the history or anything else. Money money and more money! Otherwise how or why are so many clubs in the top division there? Because of what they did in the 50s? Or the numbers who joined up for a Pals battalion? Please, that's idiotic and we have just as much history, more even, than most thank you very much. Just because southerners don't yawn on about the Noorth and how ducking fantastic Yawkshire, Laancs is ALL THE TIME etc doesn't mean we're anyless passionate about our club. It's just that we had fewer dark santanic mills and more landed gentry, besides being more confident in ourselves, back in the day when FA was formed.

Also, do some history into our club and you'll soon find out why for the best part of 20 years why we've not been able to compete and actually done bloody well just to be here still. And yes I know you escaped relegation to the conference last minute back in 80s but really your troubles seem like Donald trump losing a fiver by comparison to what we went through.
Shut your noise in other words.

This is down to your selective reading, the majority of fans wish Barnes and Ward well, and understand the move.

Do you have any examples of the latter point ???

What about all the hate Owen Coyle got when he left Burnley and moved the 31 miles to Bolton for footballing reasons :lolol:

I think that it also reflects badly that I am being accused of being on a 'fishing trip' or a 'wind up', simply because I have witnessed a lot of guff directed toward my club on two occasions and decided to call the people responsible for it out.

It isn't just about money or league. As mentioned, sincerely doubt Barnes is on more with us than he was with you and joined when promotion was a long way off. Ward won't be on much more than what he was offered here.

As a young player, would you look towards Burnley or Brighton as a better start to your career?

Austin, Rodriguez, Cork, Ings, Trippier, Mee, Vokes, McCann and more. All of them have seen their talent come on leaps and bounds and have broken into big clubs, England, or will soon have their big move. We'll thank them and send them on their way too.

Brighton? Who? Bridcutt has been the only player I've seen you take as a youth and really develop. The likes of Barnes and Buckley were developed by other teams and/or, the attitude towards them displayed by your own fans when they have left has been nothing short of a disgrace.

We all know Burnley, the town, has its problems. The surrounding area is absolutely wonderful though, and so I maintain that a matter of money and league is not the be all and end all.

Dare I suggest that we are simply a bigger club to reinforce my point? I'd hate to be accused of 'fishing'

You don't see the irony of accusing us of arrogance and then spouting the arrogant rubbish you are? You're also showing your ignorance of the players we've brought through. Barnes was a Plymouth reserve when he joined us, Zamora a Bristol Rovers reserve. That's just a few examples.

We've developed Buckley, LuaLua etc as much as you've developed Austin, who was already a good player when you signed him. Your argument is pathetic.
