They truly are another breed.

I watched that Beckham thing last night where he travelled into the depths of the Amazon jungle to meet a tribe in a remote village. Top of the show, one of the first things he says ? "I wonder if any of them will have heard of me".

Then Victoria, on learning about the heat and humidity, asks "What about your hair David ?"

- "I'll wear a hat".

That bit was pretty bad but IMO he came across very well during the rest if the programme and actually relished the fact later on that he wasn't recognised.

I have never liked Man Utd or any of their players but I actually warned to him as a person by the end.

So the Guardian don't even mention it as a talking point and post the full quote. Some tin pot website hardly anyone's heard of write a few lines, taking something out of context & that warrants a negative thread on 'premiership' footballers on NSC. For GODS sake. Maybe the OP should join a tabloid rag who are scratching around for some non story to twist & try and distract our players before a World Cup. Typical.

Let's be honest, even some of the posters here who decided to slate the England team of previous years (based on tabloid stories of course) have come to quite like our current crop of players. Maybe even support them! Non stories like this do my nut in & giving them publicity is laughable!

Come in England!!!!!!

My brother-in-law is mates with the guy who runs the Chelsea Megastore, and he always said that Ashley Cole was the nicest, most humble, most down to earth of all the Chelsea players. He said he was always approachable, always made time for the kids, always signed autographs and was always very polite. This guy also said that most of the players were arrogant cocks, JT being the worst.

As well as his charity work etc. Of course, this wasn't printed on the front page of the Sun, so won't register with most Cole bashers, who like to jump on that bandwagon...

It can't be true. Everything English is bad and everything German is good. You KNOW this. Come on.

I'm glad you see it too. It's so tedious. Is he even a full German? Or English? The fact it's Germany makes it even more ironic tbh!

Perhaps you should read up on him then. Has spent 8 years with Soton playing from the third tier upto the premiership. At 26 has played 235 games for them and 48 goals. He is now playing for England and may have a shot at playing for a club in the Champions League yet you begrudge him that. Far better what he has done than some of these 'billy big bollocks' overseas players who sign for numerous clubs purely for the money.

This

How many of us would not want to get a new job with better pay and conditions when we are at the top of our profession? Lallana seems ok to me and made a mistake but do we have to crucify the bloke?

We all know that footballers careers are relatively short and, if after 8 years service to Soton he wants to maximise his potential at Liverpool or wherever then good luck to him.

 What's that gotta do with disagreeing with your post? It's all about opinions isn't it? Luckily most share my view on this thread ;)

Premier League footballers are vile, aren't they? :-(

I know people that think all professional footballers are vile. Like many on here I've met plenty of the Albion players over the years and a vast majority have been down to earth and very friendly - I suspect that if you met many Premier League footballers they would be the same. I'll reserve judgement until I've met them. Now if you want vile then Geoffry Boycott is the pure definition of the word vile.

Well, that's what I'm saying. I don't think you'll like my pithy opinions.

How, practically, will rubbing shoulders with England players be a life changer?

I once spoke to Princess Anne. I'm still waiting for the untold riches. She had a disclaimer though, she said 'may'.

Whether or not their mere presence is a 'life changer', it is not for Lallana todecide that.

I've met a couple of England players including Lallana, as previously mentioned. I can confirm that my life didn't change as a result. Of course, meeting someone in a favela is probably a bit different from doing it at a training ground or a hotel.

Very!!!! No pressure on us atall despite being factually one of the best international teams of the last 18 years! After yet another unbeaten qualification campaign you'd think expectations would be high but luckily many have learnt a little about international football. To get out of that group would be a great achievement no doubt!

Also did you realise in terms of normal football matches (pens not counting of course), we've not lost a game for 4 years - some stat that! And even that game may have been different if there was a Lino or ref with eyes who knows!!!

Also as any English football fan should, I love watching all the games and enjoy watching the worlds best all in one tourno. (Obviously I don't include any German team or player in that).

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Because a young man or woman who is living in a place surrounded by drugs, guns, violence and gans may be inspired to not succumb to these negative influences and make something of their lives. Because if more people were aware of the situation in these "second world" economies which have economies which on one end are rising almost exponentially and on the other are seeing living conditions worsen then more work is going to be done. There is no quantifiable practical effect - i'll concede that happily - but you underestimate how meeting people who are representing a historic institution which they relate to (given how Brazil is mad about football) can provide hope and that good feeling which might not directly put food on the table, roofs over heads and the rest of it but it may instigate some one to do something towards that goal.

What's the point in anyone famous rubbing shoulders with people who live in abject poverty then? All due respect BoF, you are in the top 5% richest people to have ever lived by virtue of living in this country at the present time.

I'm well aware that I am in a privileged position. I have been lucky enough to visit many less developed countries (not second world). I fail to see how rubbing shoulders with a Southampton player is going to transform their lives. It's FIFA boloocks being spouted by a dense player.

Meeting Lallana will probably not change their lives.

Meeting or being found by a Dutch nun and being taken into their orphanage is a life changer (as i have witnessed). Having their education funded by a player, who might be willing to spare a days wages or pulled out of the shanti town/slum and given a new existence will change their life. Not having a bloody kick about with an England player.

It would be very easy to change their lives, but the rich and aspiring rich don't always want to share.
