1984 was A Levels, the King and Queen, Smugglers, Night Fever, Coasters, the Fortune of War, the Brighton Bomb, The Top Rank Suite, the Art College bar and a hot summer.

Made my weekly trip record shopping from Shoreham in my Parka, but without my best made Paul. Went with some knob from school and his girlfriend. I got beaten up by skinheads on the corner of Queens Road and North Road whilst the knob stood by bleating on about how his dad was a police officer. Shook me up for a while, yet the vinyl lured me back - even spent £100 in Sydney Street on records last week.

In 1984 Brighton was still largely populated by born-and-bred Brightonians, or at least people from the surrounding area, and definitely felt like a Sussex coastal town - a kind of amplified Hastings, Eastbourne or Worthing.

These days it's been invaded by people from all over the country and has become its own little enclave - it's lost a lot of its Sussexness as it's got (simultaneously) richer, more bohemian and - let's be honest - more up its own arse.

I've lost count of the number of Brighton relatives and friends who have moved away since the 80s, in most cases because they can't afford to live there, and in a few cases because they no longer want to.

Agree with this, I was born in Brighton and lived there until 1998, I have no family living in Brighton now.
I love the history of Brighton and I'm proud to come from there but I wouldn't want to move back, I think it's a brilliant place for young people .

by 1984 Sherrys had been renamed The Pink Coconut and its main entrance moved from Middle Street to West Street.

Reminded me, the area east of Brighton Station - the old Comet Warehouse before they had proper shops. Right spit and sawdust stuff.

I've heard a few people mention Coasters over the years. Where was it out of interest? What is there now?

The good thing about Coasters was it didn't have a dress code, to get into the other big clubs you had to wear smart shirt, trousers and shoes, I used to go round pubs in town in casual gear then sometimes make a decision to go to Coasters, I never got turned away at the door, some of the other clubs had strict door policys.
Coasters was always cheaper to get in, I think it was a pound, but it closed at 1am and the other clubs closed at 2.

Comet was like going to a clearance warehouse, I think the shop floor was up loads of stairs.

A shop in London Road, I think it was called A A Baker also sold Albion kit and merchandise.

I used to play in the Smugglers pool team which conferred free entry to Night Fever.
