You think that there isn't a disagreement about personnel acquisition?

No, that sounds realistic to me. What I notice, however, is that about 50% of people on this thread support his comments, a la his suggestion that he'd been sacked on tv. When the other side (in that case, BHAFC) made a public statement, opinion changed dramatically.
I'm sure Sunderland won't make a public statement about these comments, but if they did then it would be interesting to see if 50% of people were still backing him up.

Perhaps not publicly, but we do not know what has been promised and what is being delivered.

Poyet is a sophisticated manager, maybe he lacks that English reserve we all feel comfortable with, but it might be his way of upping the ante, to force his point.

We cannot be sure whats gone on, but whatever his way of doing things, he will only be deemed successful by winning football matches and if he thinks this might offer a better opportunity to do that then maybe its a shrewd move.

Not sure that shouting your mouth off to the press as a new manager can be seen as a shrewd move. This outburst is unlikely to strengthen his position with the board of the club.

Rightly or wrongly he is now probably perceived as a bit of a loose cannon by most clubs and I doubt he's enhancing his future prospects. If only he could just let his team do the talking on the pitch and keep his dissatisfaction in house he'd be a much more desirable manager imo.

Well I guess he could be covering his arse if he needs to walk away without buying out his contract, or if he gets fired and making sure he is compensated with the reason that his hands were tied.

Either way he has his excuses in the bag ready. I'm sure that this is the last thing the Sunderland fans want to be hearing right now.

But isnt this just the point, he will be judged nearly solely on his success on the field, for sure there might be Chairman that stay clear but thats with all managers.

If he delivers success the game and their chairmen will want him, its where modern football is at the moment, Jose Mourhino is adored because he wins, if he didnt you couldnt think of a greater loose cannon then him.

If he's so right, give me some examples of other managers who do their player negotiations with the hierarchy of their club through the media?

To be clear, I don't actually disagree with Gus' opinion on this, it's just the gobbing off to the press that I find so unprofessional.

 - him speaking his mind is one of the reasons I like him so much

Maybe but the BIG difference is Gus has really done **** all in comparison and yet is acting like a Mourhino.

I would have thought this would be exactly what the Sunderland fans DO want to hear having been through the fiasco with Di Canio and the 14 new players selcted for him, none of which he chose!

Gus is once again demonstrating what a loud-mouthed egomaniac he truly is. I'm only shocked by the short amount of time from his appointment to this first of, what I'm sure will be many, outbursts. Will he ever learn? Clearly not.

I will LOVE IT if he gets himself sacked from Sunderland. Part of me almost wishes he had landed a job at somewhere like Chelsea, where he would be dictated to by the owners constantly and see how he reacted.

You've got to laugh - have you read what he was actually reported to have said - hardly an outburst more a throw away line blown out of all proportion by those who like to over dramatise.

He talked a lot of sense in that interview - I particularly liked this bit - (maybe as a club we could learn something)

The players who are here have this opportunity, but there are things that I think we need.
If we can find them, then we’ll do it and the rest will depend on how we go.
You never know what will happen with injuries. You might get a massive injury and you need to be quick and ready.
If something happens tomorrow, then we need to have a possibility.”

Not really, he should be united with the owners and fans, not cause a split. This should really be a discussion he should have directly with the owners, not try and embarrass them.

At least wait until January to see if there are any problems?

Yes, I did read the whole article, 2 of them in fact.

Seriously Creaky. How much more evidence do you need that Gus, brilliant manager tho' he is, is simply unable to be careful and considered in his public pronouncements?

I genuinely wish he was more careful with the media, but he was and is an accident waiting to happen. If he could think before talking (and acting! Gross misconduct anyone!?), then I would love, yes love him to still be our manager. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be.

His rep continues to decline in the eyes of reasonable thoughtful chairman I've no doubt. What a crying shame FOR HIM.

Depends on the nature of the company.

In sport, where character is a consideration, it can be seen as a positive.

Not every time, of course. Just sometimes.

If you are a high flying big shot with an impressive CV, just maybe you'll be given the leeway. Although Mourinho was effectively shown the door 1st time around at Chelsea for being overly critical of Abramovich I believe? Not a Chelsea follower so it may not be the case but that is how I remember it. Gus is an up and comer and therefore, imo, needs to tread more carefully than he does. Who knows the Sunderland board could cave in to his requests and sack the Italian. But don't you find it all a little unsavoury that he is already making waves in the media, given the way it ended here?

It all says to me that he doesn't really need the gig. He's happy to admit he's prepared to walk away, as he wants to do things his way - as should any manager, within reason - or not at all. He does have the on-pitch pedigree to dictate that, but doesn't seem to have the off-pitch diplomatic skills, though.

I have no problem that Gus comes across as 'egotistical' (I prefer 'blunt'); it does seem to upset some sensitive souls, but that's their problem. And some are taking that problem with them even though he has gone. I also never saw Gus' comments about one day wishing to manage Chelsea or Spurs or Leeds as a bladder-splitting desparation-driven hankering to leave Brighton immediately; more a naive disposition to not blank a leading question, an action which would also be (sometimes deliberately) misinterpreted.

His sulking after the Palace game was pathetic, but that doesn't take away the previous three and a half years of a footballing revolution I wouldn't have missed for the world.

However, I agree that internal issues should be kept internal.

He sounded pretty desperate to get the Sunderland gig six weeks ago to me.

I'll go along with that although I wonder how many of his so called gaffes are down to English being his second language ???

Read the quote that caused so much of a stir:-

“We talked about a position the other day and considered four players."
“I picked two. It was simple."
“One of the other two was a definite no. If that one is coming, I won’t be here.”

Read it with a belligerent tone and it looks like a challenge and a threat - read it in a light-hearted way and it is the sort of comment anyone could make when presented with a choice. I do accept though that it is not something that needs to be repeated in public even though he may have said it with a smile on his face.

I wonder how many of those calling GP out on this statement agree with his sentiments though - i.e. "don't buy that player I don't want him in my team" - difficult to argue that he shouldn't make clear to his DoF his views on a particular player.
