SHOREHAM BY SEA
I'm perhaps a little less shocked by this than most Sunderland supporters because I followed his career quite closely while at B&HA; I still think it's rather reprehensible.
He's correct to be fighting his case with Ellis Short regarding the signings being his choices, not De Fanti's, but to go public when you're five matches into the job is not the way I believe a manager should behave. I'm all too aware that is an early reminder of Poyet's reign at B&HA.
Once Paolo had been so unjustly fired Gus was the man I wanted, but this story reinforces Di Canio's claim that De Fanti delivered virtually none of Paolo's first or second choices and left him to work with a dozen new men that he hadn't really wanted, only a couple of whom have featured since Poyet's arrival.
I find it grossly unfair that Paolo Di Canio is viewed the length and breadth of this land as a crazy unemployable failure, when he kept his feelings in house until he was given the push after just thirteen matches "in charge". I suppose Gus is covering his back from the start.

Good for Gus. What is the issue ? He is the manager and wants to be responsible for all the signings. After all if it all turns to sh*t he will be solely to blame so if anything it is adventurous and brave. Still lets have a pop at Gus again shall we :ffsparr:

This.

The issue is that Poyet took the job on the clear understanding that he didn't have final say in transfers. So, having accepted that, it doesn't look good that he's threatening to throw his toys out of the pram

That's quite a bold statement - are you his agent so really know this as fact ?

What are the chances, the grass is NOT greener on the other side.

He'd be better off at palace, they have no backroom staff to clash with.

Here, David Burke has said Oscar has the final say on signings. It's not a massive leap to presume Gus had that right too. Why should a manager be forced to work with players he doesn't want? Oscar doesn't have to suffer that indignity.

His gripe here was the budget, thereby restricting who he could get. It was never about signing players he didn't want. A manager must be able to do things his way to the best of the resources available - else what's the point in him being in that role?

Having said that - did Gus need to go public?

I think the best way DOF works is if the manager gives a list of players he would be happy with for a certain position and the DOF works from the top down in trying to bring them in. Also I assume he has the responsibility of putting forward researched names for positions that the manager wants to fill but ultimately the manager really must have the final say from the list that meet the budget requirement

the problem is with the word "manager". The Director of Football concept only works comfortably if you then appoint a coach. Each then has clearly defined roles.

If he's so right, give me some examples of other managers who do their player negotiations with the hierarchy of their club through the media?

To be clear, I don't actually disagree with Gus' opinion on this, it's just the gobbing off to the press that I find so unprofessional.

Off the top of my head :Rednapp, Allardyce, Mancini, Billy Davies,

I don't see what the fuss is. I'm sure plenty of managers demand the final say over signings, and why not, as they will be sacked if the signings are naff and they lose half a dozen games.

They have reached their glass ceiling, though, and are about to spiral downwards through their glass floor.

So all of these managers have had spats in the public eye about players and threatened to walk out if they didn't get who they want? Rednapp I can imagine doing that, when did Allardyce, Davies and Mancini do it? Were these spats about not being given enough money to buy players, because that is somewhat different to this new Gus scenario.

The DoF wants 4 players and Poyet only wants two of them. He wants quality not quantity according to the Guardian.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/nov/21/sunderland-gus-poyet-quit-transfer-targets

its the same quote. he's talking about considering 4 players for one position. he's happy with two suggestions, indifferent about a third and hostile towards a forth. he wants authority, and to a large degree i can agree that a manager should have final say.

Yes, he wants the final say in who joins Sunderland and rightly so. His big problem is that he just doesn't know when to shut his gob or rather when it's best to not open it in public in the first place. These types of discussions/disclosures should be done in private-not out in the media. If there is no way forward then maybe it's time for it to become public, not 5 weeks into his stint as manager.

Still, let's suck up to Poyet again shall we? :ffsparr:

That's not what you asked though?
I don't think he's having a spat. I think he's putting out to the fans that he is working with a Director of Football but he won't be put in a position where he accepts them signing players he really doesn't want. which sounds pretty reasonable to me. And not to dissimiliar to what Oscar has said about player recruitment.

No, reading back, you are right.

I don't disagree with what he is saying, we'll see if his bluff is called I guess.

Agree entirely. How would he be supposed to use players that he didn't want in the first place. It is only common sense that a Director of Football would not sign someone against the wishes of the person who is actually going to develop the team. In this case, the Ego is right.

Perhaps he has already exhausted those talks and wants to get a lead in negotiations, it seems he is playing hardball.

In his mind this is a perfect time to remind what may have been promised when he signed, a little later and this becomes irrelevant he may have already lost 5 matches on the spin by then and is fighting for his job and reputation.
