Pmsl, oh yeah...Farrington....But we all know what happened when Marney and McPhee started a season in this division and we still had Zamora to return from injury. Like I say, that was at Withdean when lets be honest, we were just happy to have a club still. Can't use that as an excuse these days.

But if we had Zamora to return from injury that season, surely we have Ulloa and CMS to do likewise this season?

No one is disagreeing that we desperately need a striker. But whatever the club do you will still be moaning. Last season was our highest finish for 30 years and you bleated and bleated like a newly born lamb in search of its mother.

We went down that season and don't bank on seeing Cms again anytime this season. And I think you will find the only thing I bleated about as you put it, was having a man like Poyet running the club. Or thought he was running the club, I should say. Don't think there are many who can look back now and say I was wrong about him.

We don't know the dynamics behind the scenes at the club but get the impression that Oscar is presented with new players by Burke. Maybe it isn't quite as simple as that. Oscar has been loyal by playing most of them including Kemy and Spanish Dave when they aren't fit. It has now got to the stage with his own reputation on the line that Oscar would understandably insist on some input into any new deals. I think I would.

David Burke explained it by saying that they, as a team, sit down and decide the type of player the club needs. He and his scouts then go out and find them, do all the legwork (are they available, are they within budget, do they want to come to us etc). He then presents his findings to Oscar, who then looks at them closer and decides yay or nay. In this case, he has decided nay, so that shows it works and he is not lumbered with players he does not want.

We also have to remember that he did not have much of a pre-season, so he is assessing the squad as an ongoing thing. And even with a pre-season, you don't really know how a player will play for you until you play competitive games.

I've noticed you say this about CMS a few times now, are you guessing or do you have information you may care to share?

Undoubtedly true in theory but I still wonder if Oscar really had that much say in half those deals. Plus the same can be said for any signing that you make - you don't know for sure how they will turn out until they play, so not unique to Oscar.

A shame no real frontline leader came in, but if Oscar didn't feel they'd do quite what he wanted, then it's a fair decision. He has to keep thinking of beyond that very moment, so as long as there seemed options for alternatives in the coming weeks that will stay for a spell and fill the goalless gap we have, then we should be better in the longrun for it. In spite of the result i thought we played well yesterday and there seemed more punch to us, particularly in the form of Ward who suddenly became an attacking force much to my relief.

Lets be honest - CMS is not the answer, i doubt he will play again for us and certainly not ahead of Ulloa. An impact sub at best but he would be expecting to start when fully fit. Oscar has already stated that his preferred tactics is a lone striker up front.

I still see CMS as being one of the 3 playing "behind" the lone striker - I think he will score loads playing off Ulloa like that. The decision is which one of the 3.

Sadly I think CMS will come back and continue running about all over the pitch like a superannuated Alex Revell. For a front man, his positional sense is shocking.

I trust Oscar implicitly
The news that he has passed on a player shows that he has the input into the transfers that we all assume that every manager has.
Let's face it - going back to the despicable wurzel as a comparison - who here would have been pleased to see 17 new faces of the calibre of those players that holloway bought come in over the summer ?
In my (not terribly) humble opinion he brought in one decent player - Jimmy Kebe - who I remember destroyed us on Boxing Day a couple of seasons ago
Now he's got a huge wage bill and is offing players on loan to get some money back.
In our situation we can't do that. I want someone that fits in and will do a job for us from day one in the few weeks/months that he is here. I don't want him to have to change to fit in but I want someone who can seamlessly fit in to our side as it stands. If that means waiting well then so be it

Apart from training with the team and settling in? These footballers are humans, don't you know?

The loanee being brought in is a professional , if the timing of the deal is messed up in effect you have an 21 day loan spell because of the International break rather than 28. I would rather the club signed a loanee on 14th Ocober than tomorrow.

I was out drinking last night and happened to watch the Barcelona game and this brought home to me what Oscar is trying tio do and as such I think that as well as our injured players coming back for January I think possibly 4 of the first team squad will go and be replaced. I think the writing is on the wall for Greer, Calde or Bruno, Barnes and possibly Buckley or Lua Lua apart from young players

Spanish teams do not play with a targetman but flood the midfield with 5 or 6 players.

In the main I applaud that, but IF a proven goalscorer was/is available , then surely it would be worth the risk. The concern I have is the over-reliance on the strong hold up striker. Barnes, despite his plus points, can't do it, even in League 1, yet we persist in it. Would it require too much tweaking to temporarily have a system that doesn't rely on this? You could argue that it means that OG has the courage of his convictions, or that it's an admission of a lack of a Plan B, something he was lauded for having earlier in the season.

The key word in this though is 'IF'. Ultimately it's all conjecture.

Most people tend to implicitly trust in a new manager. Considering we don't really know Oscar from Adam, it's only fair to start with an open book. All I'd say at this stage that the appointment of Nathan Jones flashed a warning bell. He's as much an asset to this manager as Charlie Oatway was to the last manager. Plus players like Spanish Dave and pre-injury Orlandi this season have shown, how you say, not much appetite for the more physical side of the game. Barnes is not seizing the chance as main man striker that has fallen into his lap through Ulloa's absence and Lua Lua despite being a magician as a footballer has decided that dumbass diving is the way forward though his body language wouldn't fool a junior seagull let alone a referee.

To sum up: this manager will be undone by the players he inherited. Clearout?

Two points:

1. We are desperate for goals so on balance I think I'd rather that a loanee striker came in asap and give them maximum time to train with the team etc ahead of our next game. Our need is now, we can't anticipate what might happen next week - knowing our luck this player may no longer be available to us, even in a few days time - and we've been gazumped on plenty of occasions before. I'm not sure we can afford to fanny about anymore.

2. I still think CMS has a big role to fill and I'd like to think that Oscar might just bring out the best in him. It certainly wouldn't do him any harm to get a proper run in the team alongside Ulloa rather than being a lone target man like he was for much of the time Gus. OK Barnes was often on the pitch at the same time as CMS but Gus used to play him wide left, so not a striking partnership in the proper sense.

Bit harsh judging CMS before he has even played under Oscar. For all we know the slightly different style of play could benefit him - who knows.

Would like to see him given a try, and if that doesnt work out - then maybe look at cashing in.......and then watching him grab 30 a season with another club.

The club have been very canny in offering Greer a contract extension as they will be able to ask for a fee instead of letting him go for nothing. Isn't Bruno's contract up at the end of the season ? Calderon is the one player who strikes me as being offered a coaching role at the club as an alternative to being released. By March it could well turn out that Barnes is the 4th choice striker. It will be a tough decision if either Buckley or LuaLua is axed but the solution might be that one of them has to go to bring someone else in.
