Great post, Hoddle's ability to pass and read the game was probably on par with Larry Bird's ability to play basketball - did you play against any lads who went on to the top level that day ?

Funnily enough Vinny Samways played in the youth match I mentioned, the lad was a different class just waltzed pass us if we weren't there, I found out after that match how could you had to be to make it as a pro footballer sadly I wasn't good enough but have some great memories playing in games against Arsenal, Charlton & Spurs youth teams
Out of all the players that I played with at the Albion youth set up at the time Steve Palmer was the only lad to make it as a pro I believe he went on to play for Watford & Ipswich (I think it was those 2 clubs )

Sorry but there is no one better than George Best.

He didn't have one weakness in his game. He could dribble, shoot, head, tackle, pass, was two footed and it was only towards the end of his glory that his temperament started letting him down.

Bale does not have this all round ability. gascoigne was closer but not to the same level.

and don't forget half the time he was hungover or even pissed, not just Best in name....

Gazza was absolutely brilliant. No doubt in my mind that he is better than Bale and at least on par with Best.

Giggs in his prime must be near the top as well.

Let's see in 3 years time, i.e. if he can stay consistent to the form that he's in at the moment.

Also, throw into the mix Ryan Giggs, Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Kenny Dalglish.

No hoddle and gazza still ahead of him. He was outstanding last season no question but still a way to go to be better than those 2 for me

If Paul Gascoigne hadn't been so easily led astray, he could have been one of the greatest players the world has ever seen. It is such a shame he never played for Man Utd on Ferguson's watch. As it is, he was probably one of the five best players of his time, which is more or less where Gareth Bale is now, albeit only for one or two seasons so far.

Gazza better than Best??..... Jesus I've heard it all now. People always have a flawed perception of Gascoigne, 1 good World Cup and a couple of good seasons for spurs but after that nothing of note. Bale has the same technical ability and a better goalscoring record as well as being superior physically.

He's still revered at Lazio and he wasn't too bad at Newcastle! Tom Finney said he was the best he'd seen in 30 years before he even became a first team regular at Newcastle. Not saying he was better than Best, because he wasn't, but he was one of the best we've had in the last 50 years.

No one has reached the level of Best, from '65 to '71, he scored 108 league goals in 241 games from midfield. Incredible. Did someone say Gazza!?

Bale needs another 4 or 5 consistent seasons, then we might be able to talk about him in the same breath as Best.

Bale would walk into any team in the world atm, as good as he is, I think like many others have said, Gazza is on a different planet. Remember watching Gazza in U21 game at the Goldstone, you could tell that day he was gonna be a England Legend. Best could have super seeded Pele if he hadn't gone off the rails like he did.

Paul Gascoigne almost single-handedly got Tottenham to the FA Cup final that he got injured in and from which he never really recovered. He scored in pretty much every round on the way to the final that year, including a hat-trick against Portsmouth and the free kick in the semi-final against Arsenal.

Although his England career never quite hit the heights after that goal in the Maracana, John Barnes was one hell of a player between about 1988 and 1992 when he lost his pace and was never really the same player thereafter, although he did reinvent himself later in his career as a sitting midfielder.

In terms of technical ability, Paul Scholes' passing range puts him up there with the most gifted players from these isles in my time watching football.

Didn't really see enough of him when I was growing up, but if this is a debate about the best British footballer since George Best, surely Kenny Dalglish must come under consideration too.

Yes, yes he is.

No British player (since) has had the raw talent that he does.

Giggs will no doubt achieve more, but Bale is a better player in terms of basic football ability.
