I've got good friends who never went to Withdean, never even would've considered it. They've got season tickets at the Amex and still claim to support United/Arsenal/Spurs.. They only go because of the success the club has been having recently. If we were to go back to struggling at the bottom of League One they wouldn't keep going.

I'm not really too fussed I just agree with the statement in the thread.

Surely we'll only find out just how many regulars are part of this group if and when relegation happens. There's a good chance that many new fans will remain fans if theings go tits up in a couple of years. Obviously not all of them, but I doubt we'll ever see crowds under 10k at the Amex for a league game.

This thread is weird Das. You are bemoaning 'modern football' and those who follow it, yet you're passing up a night that will be the closest thing to the old nights you yearn for, that we've had in years.

I'd say it was much cooler to support us 4/5 years ago.

more cool 15-16 yrs ago. I am not looking for a badge of honour etc - i love the albion now was much as i did in the past. I dont care about JCL the more the merrier to support this outstanding football club - I just sit in the amex and marvel at the evolution of this football club since 1997. Marvellous scenes.

If things ever go badly wrong at Brighton (hopefuly they wont, but who knows) these so called fans that are loyal and spend money at Albion will soon disappear by the thousand !!!

1) How different is that from any other club around the country.
2) Things did go badly wrong for us, or had you forgotten that little detail?

seems to be a new breed appearing on the back of some success and the stadium , how longs it going to last, really do feel their only here for the ride, makes me sick at the sight of some of these types, you know there's no real commitment in them AND THEIR KILLING THE ATMOSPHERE,OVER REACTION ON MY PART .............................don't think so ???

Differcult to really get what your complaining about. So your saying you want us to sit in a half empty stadium with only the 5000 odd people who watched at the Withdean? That will benefit the club how? Don t get me wrong i get your drift but all successful clubs have people that come along for single games wander around in shirts ect. Look at man united ect. You can call them plastics but i doubt the club complains when they buy a shirt or come for a single game and neither should you as its more money in the club and better players being brought in. Do you think Ulloa or Lopez would be here is we had 5000 people in our stadium? I dont as i know we could not afford it.
Then you go on about not going tonight as its so bad. Lol thats a joke mate. 1260 loyalty points needed originally. Those people going are not plastics are they. You sound the plastic fan there. Going through thick and thin ect ect.
So stop moaning enjoy the good times as personally i can see a packe out AMEX for years to come and wven if these people were not at the Withdean Goldstone or Priestfield then so what. Those spending money now is improving the club right now.

I don't get the haterid for the newer fans from the ones who have supported the Albion for years and seen the club through rough times. I am 19, only followed the club for about 3 years and don't have a ST. I have been to more away games this season then home ones. Does that make me a bad fan? But do I still care about the club?

I don't get why some people don't want people putting their hard earned money into the club and supporting a team that we all love. Why is that such a bad thing? Just think, everyone on here were once a new fan, even if it was 40 years ago 'on a cold and windy night against Aldershot at the Goldstone.'

JOL-allow me...........i went to the Goldstone with school mates on many occasion,we went to Gillingham sometimes and some went to Withdean on regular occasion,i did not, only a few times, so i applaud those that did....

Now then, here's the point.............we now have the Amex I (was) and 1 of the said friends(still is) close friends with a person(currently) closely connected with the club in an indirect way, this person was never seen with us at the Goldstone, but now claims lifelong supportership? he never went,he was old enough and used to ridicule Brighton and us for going at times.

He supported Man U and still does.......but can be seen every week at the Amex-that's the type the OP is on about..

It's such a shame.

Club was much better then.

And now there are 20,000 real fans out there who cannot get in because of all the plastics :(

Well, quite. The point I was hamfistedly trying (and failing) to make, was that supporting us now is categorically not as cool, due to the sheer number of people doing it. And noone supports the Albion because it's cool. And that's enough sense for this thread. I'm going to post some more random pictures.

8K was the hard core at the Goldstone for years. Gillingham saw it drop to about 2k and then Withdean did pretty well with around 7k considering the fayre on offer as a stadium and being exposed to the elements. I'd hazard a guess that if things nosedive in the near future we'd probably have a hard core of about 12k given the fact that the Amex is fan friendly.

Nothing changes and we'd be getting crowds in excess of 20k even if we were in the 4th division, as long as we were near the top and playing good football

I see your point but he is still putting money into the club? The fact he claims to be a life-long fan and used to ridicule you just makes him a bit of a google.

But it has always been the same in the 50 years I have supported the club. When things are going well, everyone turns out and wants a ticket. When things are bad, gates are abysmal. The only thing now is that the club have the security of high season ticket sales, and a fear in many supporters that if they give them up, they may never get another one again in the future.
Calling people 'JCLs' is a lot of bollocks. People stop and start going for a number of reasons. You gonna call anyone who didn't go to Gillingham a JCL? If so, then it applies to 90% of our fans.
I am just glad we still have a club to support, some current success, full houses at home and the prospect of a brighter future than ever before.
