I think you will find he meant

May Allan forgive her and all of us.

The H is very near the N on our QWERTY keyboards.

An easy mistake to make. It also renders it a very harmless statement, apart from poor old Allan who has now been forced to carry out unwanted diety duties.

The initial reaction is understandable but misguided.

His colleague was not suggesting that Allah forgive her for having cancer. It was a general cultural reference to the fact that everyone is a sinner in the eyes of the muslim god and requires forgiveness to enter paradise.
So therefore the colleague was hoping (as a result of his religious belief) that his mother would reach eternity. He also included the rest of you in that. Looking at it from his perspective it was actually a respectful thing to do.He did nothing wrong.
This is the not the forum for such discussions or angry outbursts though-it resolves nothing-save a few rational posts.

So what happens to us when we die ?

I will tell you, we stop breathing and our life is gone, we are dead and we either get buried or cremated - end of and good night.

Anybody who thinks we go to an idylic place called heaven or some burning pit called hell or any other after life is seriously deluded !!!

Out of interest can you produce evidence to support your belief?

You certainly seem evangelical about it.

Did you mean DEITY or does Allan have to monitor everything we eat?

I am a fairly hardcore non believer and think organised religion has a lot to answer for but whatever makes him happy.

Ok since i am holiday from saving the youth of south london, let me make my second ever post and add my modest opinion.

I do agree that the presumptions that people of religion and indeed some religions make themsleves, that all humanity is bad is a rather hypocritical and patently false idea. This is one of the main reasons I am an aetheist. Another being since i dont believe in father christmas or the tooth fairy why else would I be taken in by others fantasies :)

However to make an assumption that because it is a fantasy it has no value would be a major mistake. Religion is clearly a powerful force and has a major impact on peoples lives. To write this off as bad , is to make the same assumption that people are bad. They are not. They are human and make human decisions good and bad. Humanity has commited major attrocities supposedly in the name of religion but also great triumphs invoking religious concepts.

The point, made so articulately by Tyrone, is that if we are to work out anything about humanity, we have to open our minds and drop our prejudiced preconceptions. We all have them and make them every day. Try and look at what people say, however closed mindedly, with an open mind. We might learn something that way.

Anyway just my musings on how to progress.

Er yes, its quite simple, when you die you die and thats it. THERE IS NO HEAVEN AND THERE IS NO HELL !!

So no proof then just your belief.

For clarity, belief is the psychological state in which an individual holds a proposition or premise to be true.

If you had a microphone up Churchill Square with some of your mates you would be as committed to your belief and uncomprehending that others don't share it like you as the other mob of Herberts who are committed to the opposite belief that there is a Heaven and Hell.

Two sides of the same coin as far as I am concerned and just as tiresome whenever either side is shoving their beliefs down other peoples throats.

History proves the 'enlightened' zealous secularist fascists are just as dangerous (if not more so) as the religous zealot fascists of the past. Its just another ideology..........that is all.

Don't think he'd like it much if I asked the atheist non-god to forgive him.
Another gem from Goldstone!

Really don't know what makes these poor miguided souls tick.

It's the prospect of eternal life in heaven with all those vestel virgins. (yes, they actually believe that!)

Thank you for recognizing "gems" when you see them.

Started quite an interesting debate here, didn't I??

I have now decided that all the world's problems are down to over-population. If all the black, brown and yellow people stopped having so many kids (not a racist comment, I think you will find that the statistics back me up ... whitey is having far fewer offspring), then there would be far less poverty. Far less poverty means less fertile recruiting grounds for fanatics of all religions. It is usually those with no prospects who are drawn into extremism.

So the world's problems solved. Stop having so many f***ing kids!!!!

Actually, though I'm not sure whether you are being flippant or not, you've hit the nail firmly on the head. Overpopulation is the cause of so many of the world's problems, and it is the doctrines regarding birth control, of so many religions, that make me anti-religious. What people believe is their business, but when they breed selfishly and excessively it becomes everbody's business.

Actually, no, I was not being flippant. Overpopulation is the biggest threat to the world. Period.

Personally if I got an email like that I'd think, nice of him to thank us, don't care for the last bit, and then I'd probably file or delete and move on.

As for religion, I was raised very much so Church of England. I'm at the stage now after 30 odd years where I've come to the conclusion that a very long time ago, someone wrote about some curious events involving a man and a group of his friends. Those writings, have been interpreted, re-interpreted, mis-interpreted, transcribed, re-transcribed, guessed as to their meaning, and so on. Take that as you will, but what I've taken from it are the bits that say, don't kill, adulter, steal, lie or covet your neighbours donkey.

Where I have problems with religion is if someone declares themself a christian but then goes about murdering in the name of their religion. That I cannot abide.
