I remember this question being asked to Greg Stanley at the Concorde in '95. The kiddie that asked it got a right hammering from the crowd...

By just putting "Gary Hart?" does not exactly make it clear you are joking.

And what does your age (or lack of it) in 1983 have to do with it?

Well in that case I am very sorry for any distress or embarassment I may have caused you because you couldnt understand my joke!

:SARCASTICsmilie:

It was asked earlier how old I would have been in 1983 which is why I put my age down.

did he answer? no he didn't from what i recall!!!!!!!!

Fooled quite a few people for quite a long time though, Stanley seems to escape most of the fans vitriol that Bellotti and Archer get, when he was the guy responsible for bringing them in, in fact just thinking about him still makes me

But I accept that whatever else he got he didn't get the FA Cup money

I do believe the board made a number of shrewed business investments. Including bulk purchase of a number of club branded Betamax video recorders, venture capital into Clive Sinclair's C5 project and part ownership of the racehorse Shergar.

It was rumoured that the players were at that time the highest paid players ever to play in a cup final because of the bonus built into their contracts, so their probably wasnt a lot left.

Lawrenson, Robinson and Foster on 10 year contracts.
Correct. There was also the matter that even when they were sold part (if not all) of the remainding periods on their contracts had to be paid-up as 'loyalty' payments. Something to do with not handing in written transfer requests.

This was in the early years of players being contracted to a club for a fixed period (Freedom of Contract). It had come in in about 1978 to replace the earlier system of 'Retain and Transfer' whereby once you signed to a club you were their 'property' until they wanted to sell you. Quite a few clubs f***ed up. Bristol City actually went bust because they'd put players on ten year contracts at 1st divison wages, and then struggled big-time when they got relegated.

EDIT: Anyway to answer the question, what happened to the Cup Final money? It got spent keeping the Albion going.

Mr T. Millard would be the man with the Cup Final money story, and Mr J. Melia the man with the nice new house purchased just after the replay (allegedly).

I always thought The players had it written into their contracts that if the club ever played in a major final or one the league championship all money made from such an event would be divided equally between the playing squad. Now the Albion did attract some top players in those days!

I am sure Vinnicombe metioned this once.
