Knight -reason for few signings?

Much of it, no doubt, to the directors who (apparently) NEVER stump up any cash to keep the club going.

Personally, I doubt if they will ever see their money again - although there are other people on NSC who seem convinced that some of them are already using the club's assets to line their own pockets.

To the Directors.

Many of the Directors have access to borrow money. They came on "board" of their own choice. Nobody made them do it.

So why pour good money after bad?

The chances are that the money they paid to date will not be recovered, so why piss more of it away?

Thank you (Dave the Gaffer take note and then you won't be so incredulous when I post - even if I said it was only 12 million)

The real facts are indeed as the accounts. I merely have a difference of opinion of whether to "invest" or "not invest". Our hardcore support over the last three years has shown what lack of further investment/borrowing is doing.

If we keep spending eventually the debt will become overpowering and the club will fold.....we have to be cautious until the new stadium arrives ..it wont be pretty in the meantime but at least we will still have a team to support

I think you don't understand the difference between 'invest' and 'gamble'. I repeat what I said about Leeds, millions spent on players, and the club now is in the same division as us.

The gamble could come off and we are promoted, or it could fail and we go out of business. It depends on your attitude to risk.

As did Forest before them.

If we were going to gamble it should have been to keep us in the Championship...at the current time I'm happy the club is still in business and I have a team to follow ..if they think its bad now they obviously didnt suffer the Gillingham years

I'm sorry. I should have realised that cjd clearly does have mad cow disease in terms of his understanding of finance, and therefore not SOIL this thread with details.

Difficult to argue with that......even though I worked as an accountant, at a printing company, in my earlier years. I well rememeber going out for lunch with my then boss, Michael Green, and him showing me a photographic studio he wanted to buy called Carlton Photography.I think it it was for sale for about £20,000. I argued with Mr.green about the point of buying it, but he insisted it was a good investment. It later became known as Carlton TV.Off the top of my head, I think it was worth about £50,000,000 by the time he lost a Boardroom battle with Thames TV..? a few years ago. So...what do I know..?

But Carlton was a potential investment, and it was only £20,000, which is peanuts compared to the £13million of debt that the Albion have to service.

If there was a chance to sign a player for £20k I would say go for it, we did it with Alex Revell after all for a sum not dissimilar.

The odd thing about football supporters is that, Alex Revell may well be better than the leon Constantines of this world, but to get the "fairweather supporters" to Withdean, they want to see "money" signings.Alex Revell alone, will not put new "bums" on seats.

I agree, but what if we signed a few players for £1/2million, and they turned out to be crap. By the time you factor in their wages it would be a million down the drain.

Sorry to be nerdy about this, but in 1996/7 which club had the highest wage bill and spent more on players than any other in the fourth division that season........it was US, and look where we spent nearly all of the season.

Sorry to be "nerdy" about this....but wasn,t that also the season that Withdean was a "sell-out" every week, with people queuing half way up Queens road on a Monday morning, to buy tickets for the next home game...?
That the club wanted to expand Withdean to cope with the demand..?

No, 1996/7 was the last season at the Goldstone, and we were shit, despite spending about £300,000 on the likes of Craig Maskell, Ian 'Bonkers' Baird, Jason Peake, Paul Armstrong et al.

The crowds were pretty crap too for the first two-thirds of the season.

Apologies.......but my argument for the first season at Withdean still has its merits. Of course you will factor in the return to Sussex, but likewise your example of the last year at the Goldstone hardly promised "hope for the future".
