This is a good start. But is one scapegoat ever enough?

I don't want to get ahead of events, but I'm reminded of Jonathan Fink, who recently speculated, after several arrests but before Russia lost 30% of its fleet of strategic bombers, that this might actually be the beginning of a Stalin style purge.
Crikey! They don't learn. Always go in these high buildings instead of living in a bungalow

No engineer, but Shirley weakening the base structure will limit bridge weight capacity more than bits of missing road surface (which can be fixed more easily).

I have a sneaky feeling this operation isn't over yet?

Loosen up the base before missiles?
Diagram of the bridge structure here, for you nerds 😁

It's likely to be less spectacular than blowing up visible bits of the deck, since the bridge will probably still be able to carry its own weight (evidently, since it's not collapsed), and it may well be able to carry cars or lighter loads. But in the long run unless they specifically designed the bridge for massive explosions* it'll have caused significant damage to the substructure which will heavily limit the capacity of the bridge.

The fun bit is that they probably can't actually inspect the damaged areas to find out how much load the bridge can safely carry, even assuming it's not now gradually sinking under its own weight, which is a possibility. So you either heavily restrict it indefinitely, or just run vehicles over it and hope for the best until something more obviously breaks, which is then a complete nightmare to fix.

* There are sections of bridge and building design codes which cover "forces due to explosions", but I doubt they go as far as the sort of explosion seen here.

No wonder Zelensky didn't want to share details of Operation Spiderweb with Trump beforehand. This Darren Beattie character who is the acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs is a huge security risk. He hasn't even had proper security vetting. Trump has completely undermined the national security of the US and also global security with his highly dubious and ill-judged appointments... .

"Trump official who shut down counter-Russia agency has links to Kremlin
Darren Beattie, who alarmed the State Department with his pro-Moscow views, is married to a woman whose uncle has ties to Vladimir Putin

A senior official who dismantled the US government’s Russian disinformation unit is married to a Russian woman with links to the Kremlin, The Telegraph can reveal.

Bozze edit: Wholesale copy-and-paste of article removed. Please do NOT copy and paste whole articles onto NSC. Those who fund and publish journalists deserve the opportunity to benefit from the views of that work. Additionally, expensive copyright claims could be made against NSC, which would financially ruin the site.

From about 26.30 ish....that Congress vote on increasing sanctions against Russia is, apparently, going to happen this week. Speaker Johnson has approved the vote (presumably with Trump's silent acceptance then).

It's excellent to have a civil engineer lurking on this thread! May your input be required more frequently 😁.

BBC News - Putin will seek revenge for Ukraine drone attack, warns Trump

Trump is so sided with Putin. Why can't he tell Putin, no you started the war, you don't have to respond, you should end it. He is just Putin's puppet, repeating what Putin said
