People stand in front of the line constantly in the wall. Two players are stood in front of the line in the wall in this particular set piece and nobody bats an eye.

Slightly off topic.

But the sky coverage of him and treating him like some returning hero was a complete farce.

Let's all promote a man who was banned for 8 months.
I’m going to stick my neck out and suggest he wouldn’t be getting the same adulation if he wasn’t talented and English

I thought the guy was a bit of knob with his recent interview and general lack of remorse for his actions. And when the spotlight is well and truly on him, instead of keeping his head down, he does this. He’s a prick. End of.

This. I see no real difference with what Toney did to what walls do constantly. We've all seen a wall get set too close, the ref push them back, the wall then start inching closer again.

Defenders saw the ball get moved, they should have known what was coming and blocked the shot. Defensive failure IMO.

It's cheating.
What's more concerning is further proof of incompetent/corrupt officials.

Cheating. I suspect if the ref saw him do it, he’d redraw the foam and book him. Amazed none of the defenders notice him move the ball twice and move the foam line.

It's cheating, pure and simple. We should not, of course, be surprised that a player with so little grasp of the requirement to comply with the no-betting rule is relaxed about breaking other rules. As for the laws of the game he could have been cautioned under at least two of the laws. VAR should have done its job and spotted the infringement and disallowed it.

Having said that, am I bothered? No. Players are always looking to gain an advantage by breaking rules. I don't like VAR but if we are going to put up with it at least do it properly.

Good. The FA should take retro action on this otherwise it makes a precedent. But you know they're not going to after giving him the gambling ban because it'll look like they're picking on him.

It is cheating IMO. Because it's against the rules. The exact spot for the free kick has been determined by the official in charge of the game and he's not only moved the ball from the position, but moved the officials marking spray to hide his actions.

At least a one game ban and a fine otherwise it'll become an acceptable activity.

I'm not an expert on the laws of the game, but I strongly suspect that, as a player, you are not allowed to take the referees foam and draw your own line.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. Is it against the laws of the game ? Regardless, not his fault the defender jumps out of the way. Toney is a brilliant player and showed it in that game.

I suppose the glib answer is, it's cheating if you get caught, clever if you don't.

But I would suspect that moving the ball a bit is ok whearas moving the ref's shaving foam is almost certainly not.

Correct. I’m just amazed that no-one saw him move the foam, it’s so blatant. Can’t see this ever happening again.

Still not seen an answer, from those asking for retrospective action, to the question, "are those in the wall standing in front of the line drawn equally cheating and should they have action taken against them?"

Never seen a free kick being retaken because a player is just in front.

Stepping over the line is trivial, you could argue that you didn't mean to. Picking it up and moving it is blatant!
