I think there was only one incident that needed looking at. A foul in the first half against us. It was an 'umpire's call' so VAR was barely noticed.

Someone here said he’s not in charge of adding time on. Is that correct?
Blew for everything but was consistent, which is nice. Some of the signalling was almost interpretive dance. Way better than any English ref though. Shame about the “corner”.

Thought he was one of the best refs we’ve had this season - which admittedly doesn’t say much about the others. He didn’t have any really big decisions to make, but I didn’t think he got much wrong. As much as we’d want a perfect refereeing performance we’re never going to get it.

Few opportunities to book their keeper for time wasting but didn’t bother. Jason Steele innocently looks for clarification on where he needs to take a free kick from and gets booked.

I thought he started well, called a lot of stuff that if he’d left the game would have descended into a farce again, even though some were probably a bit pernickety. He was certainly far better than what we get in the PL, although I thought he could have picked up on the time wasting and the feigning injury, as it was getting stupid, their tall skinny player must have been injured every 2 mins at least, poor chap must be in hospital by now as surely he was completely broken the way he behaved. The ref missed a few obvious fouls in the second half before we scored, but I didn’t think it was too bad at all, we’ve had far worse!.

I loved the no nonsense two yellow cards to Lallana and a Froggy. Brandished with an assertive campness that Nigel Owens would have applauded. The corner was just one of those things. It was only the TV replay that really picked up the fingertip save. I'm sure the keeper felt robbed.

At the beginning of the match, Marseilles found that if they went down, the whistle blew…..every single f***ing time.
Our opposition then used this to their advantage at every moment. Breaking up play and our flow wherever they were out of possession. Bunch-o-kynts.
What a weak, pathetic and arrogant ref. Buying all their acting each time.
He’ll never get the publicity he deserves now cos we won. Hope we never see him again.

Bit of a mixed bag for me. That first ten minutes, I'm not sure we got more than two passes before he was stopping play for a foul. Then he started to let everything go. Physically an old-fashioned barrel-chested man who had a strong air of control and discipline. Snuffed out pretty much the only flare point when Lallana got upset with their player kicking the ball away.
Yes, he let a lot of timewasting go, but perhaps he did so because we were winning at that point? Marseille wasted so much time, which we'd want added on, but it would be somewhat upsetting if they scored in the 8th minute of injury time that we were only playing because of their timewasting. And let's be honest, Steele and Dunk were pushing it with every goalkick themselves. So it wasn't all them.

Too much many soft fouls given. A couple years ago they tried to let the games flow at the Euros and allowed for more physical contact. Games were more free flowing and enjoyable to watch. This season the refs seem to have gone backwards. Like everything from the FIFA, UEFA, Premier League etc. none of these diktats seem to last and the number of minutes of added time seems to be going backwards as well. Too many teams have come to the Amex to fall over, waste time and play act and I for one am sick of it. I’m looking forward to seeing us play against a team at home that will come at us and a referee that doesn’t fall for all this well, ‘gamesmanship’ or whatever you want to call it.

More like a keeper taking a spectacular catch off a no ball where the replay showed that a fraction of the heal was behind the line.
But if I had been the keeper I would have pointing to the corner flag let alone the Albion players. 'Excuse me, I SAVED that'

it’s an interesting conundrum. i think he was very good in the context of a european game. by that i mean, the other top european leagues are generally less intense and physical so the refs generally allow less contact. i think, considering that, he did pretty well. no howlers, and the foul detection was very good as per the laws of the game, accounting for the fact that you’d get away with more in the PL. still, as with all the european refs, bar the one we had in the first AEK game, he was a mile away from the clowns we have to deal with each week in the league

Good or bad? I can see both sides. What I liked was his sense of authority. The players seemed to pick up on this quickly and there was much less haranguing of the officials than usual.
However… I thought he didn’t let the game flow. I can’t recall a game I’ve been at where so many free kicks were awarded. Worst thing for me was the Marseille players never retreated 10 metres to allow a quick free kick to be taken. In the PL, there would have been yellow cards for that. Very annoying. After all the time wasting from Marseille I was expecting at least 10 mins to be added on. Of course, after we scored I was delighted it was only 5. But had we reached 90 mins on 0-0 and got only 5 added, we’d have been furious.
Because we won the game I’m in forgiving mood. Had we drawn or lost I’d have been quite annoyed with the ref for letting all the time wasting go.
