The Co-Op made £100 m in profit last year, I am sure they can lose a few sausage rolls to people trying to feed themselves or need a bit of booze to help with whatever pain or demons they are struggling with (in lieu of any support offered by the State).

Meanwhile the costs go up for every other customer. How do you think they continue to make profit? By passing on costs of stock loss to people who still think it’s good form to pay for items you wish to own.

Done a Frexit, now in London
Southern Co-op is using facial recognition technology from Facewatch, a London-based startup. Every time someone enters one of the 18 shops using the tech cameras scan their faces. These CCTV images are converted to numerical data and compared against a watchlist of ‘suspects’ to see if there’s a match. If a match is made, staff within the store receive notifications on smartphones.

That will get all the ‘privacy human rights’ lot in a right tailspin

At which point the staff will…. Do nothing.

Seems an expensive and legally dubious Method of ending up with the same result as before.

Easiest and cheapest way is to pass cctv onto police and let them deal with it.

If nothing else, the Co-Op owes a duty of care to its staff by hiring security guards. No way should they be left at the mercy of any low-life toe-rag that fancies doing a supermarket sweep for a couple of bottles of bubbly 'to help with whatever pain or demons they are struggling with'

I agree. Nobody would want to work security at a co-op though. Far too risky and you already know the business doesn’t have your back. They’ll end up having trouble hiring any staff.

Warning I just filled up my rucksack with 3 bottles of prosecco and 2 bottles of Amarone. Slowly sauntered to the exit via the fruit and veg route and spotted a Security man.

Kingsway Co-op is no longer free!

And then what?

An 18 year old shop assistant is supposed to challenge a possible drugged up adult who doesn't care if they hurt anyone?

Perhaps they could call the police ........................................................................?

Good. I think if Kingsway co-op doesn’t care about it’s staff it needs to get the problem under control for the residents who live above them.

The shoplifters hang around outside for ages making a nuisance of themselves, go in and fill up and then stash it while they go back in for more. For hours at night time. Sometimes they line bottles of booze up on the traffic island and the addicts come along and select what they want, like a bottle stall. ****ing ridiculous.

Alzate lives above!

Security man in Blatchington Road today as well. Must be worried about losing alcohol licence for reasons you mention above.

Ah yes! He is going to need his sleep now.

I think with the Kingsway one at least, it’s becoming a nuisance with anti-social behaviour. As you say, they’ll lose their license if they don’t attempt to fix the issue.

I'm back with more tales of woe. As mentioned, I've shops on Brighton seafront and shoplifting is common, police are unheard of on the seafront and 999 gets you nowhere. First up a couple of videos.
Kids who we caught twice in two days, and the girl is filming the lad nick the stuff.

I've loads more but NSC doesn't accept them as they're too large. A classic is over £40 of goods. Son leaves wheelchair dad outside and dad fills a bag full of goods. He was still filling bag when son returns. Did son know, it was so obvious I'd say yes, but still they just went off. We caught both of them.
Pride weekend this weekend and Saturday is just hell. I have three staff per shop. One is serving and two are just stood outside stopping the theives. As I run off chasing someone one way a thief will pick something up and walk the other way. Take a look at the seafront Saturday evening. Every shop would normally be open until 10:00 in the evening but we all close around 8 because it doesn't pay to stay later.
And the next comment from some smartarse will be 'yeh, you charge rip off prices and make good profits'. Tomorrow I'm coming around to your house and take the milk, cheese and butter from your fridge. How do you feel now? It's only a few ££'s worth. Oh, then I'll do it again every day, now how do you feel?

You have my sympathy - so many awful people young and old around nowadays, acting with impunity. They know they will get away with it. My only query, is why have stuff so open on shop front, almost an invitation? Appreciate you have to encourage people in but perhaps "dummy" or faked up goods only out front or glued in? (perhaps a poor idea though). Going off topic, ! walked around town yesterday and Brighton just seems a city centre of foreign tourists and street bums. I've given up with the tidy up behind the wooden benches opp the theatre royal/back of pav park gardens - we've found too many needles, knives, hammers, bolt cutters and 100s of beer cans and bottles.... cleared it (me, 2 ladies of 75 and 80 and one young lad) several times ..... it all returns within couple of weeks. Given up (especially as we know we had treading in piss and probably shit aswell). Addiction in Brighton is out of hand.
