[Albion] Keeping RDZ at Brighton for as long as possible

Personally I love the guy, and I don't think I am alone in this. Potter had his doubters. Does RDZ have any doubters? I doubt it.
I hope he's going to stay for a long time with us. Perhaps it's a big ask, but I'd like him to stay to create a legacy here like Sir Alex Ferguson did at Man U, or Wenger, or Brian Clough at Forest.
Brian Clough was one of the greatest managers this country has produced. He went to a big club, Leeds, but ended up at Forest who were not a big club and stayed with them for nearly 20 years.

I don't think De Zerbi is primarily motivated by personal ambition the way others seem to be in terms of money/salary. Other managers are all about what's in it for them, as we learned back in September. (Don't get me wrong, I get that it's fair enough to want to further one's career, but really?) De Zerbi seems different: he wants to build a great team. And I think he will appreciate the challenge of turning Brighton into a Champions League level team rather than just joining an established big team that has already done it all. He is ambitious in terms of achieving great things in football, and the decisive factor on how long he stays with us will be whether he sees that Brighton are a club that will step up to match those ambitions. I think if Tony Bloom plays it right, he might be able to secure RDZ's services long-term.

He obviously has a love for the club, players and fans, which you can see when he talks.
He has got a SOH, which comes out in pressers.
The main indication he'll be hanging around, is possibly the players that extending their contracts.
They want to stay, as something special is happening at the Albion.

His history is that while at Sassuolo once he felt he couldn't take them any further he left.

So the OP is right in a way, the club will have to match whatever deficiencies RDZ is thinking are holding the team back from his aspirations.

The issue for TB and us is, he has propelled us to a position of European places and competing for trophies. He isn't going to tolerate missing out on these because the club don't sign A, B or C after selling X & Y. While top 10 is hugely successful for us, I don't think missing out on top 7 because our squad gets a big thin is something he is going to wear for long.

Then if the success does come and the club do match his ambition, then he is going to offered top jobs, so a double edged sword which says to me at least, we need to enjoy him while we can.

Old Championship Manager football games used to have a default “reject all offers” feature you could put on players. Need to use that in real life for him.

I obviously know nothing, but regarding looong term future he's always expressed the desire of exploring new foreign leagues because he's an adventurous guy, so he won't spend all the rest of his career in the PL. But as I said this concerns the very long term, not the immediate future. And who knows, maybe he'll change his mind on that as well.

But then the model breaks, we don’t sign Ayari, Enciso, the young Argie types necessarily if there is no ‘pathway’ - so the trick will be balancing departures at the right time. He knows what he signed up for

I think he needs to accept that he won’t get everything his own way as he might be a bit hot headed, which will have him at odds with Barber from time to time.
I hope he accepts that this is a club where he can develop himself and the club. He’s made a good start but hasn’t won anything yet.

I’m a big fan of RDZ, but still think we should only try to keep him for as long as it’s right for all parties. While I’d love for him to commit to the club for the long-term, and become our Sir Alex, I’m not sure that happens any more in world football.

I don’t want an unhappy manager feeling chained to the club, nor do I want the club feeling that they need to make a change but being reluctant to due to cost.

With Potter, Tony agreed a long-term contract extension quickly after signing him. I suspect he’ll do the same with RDZ *if* he’s seeing what he needs for RDZ to be a long-term appointment.

The question mark in my mind is whether RDZ has the patience to allow good players to leave and see them replaced by raw(er) recruits without becoming frustrated himself.

RDZ will have had some trepidation about whether his style/philosophy would translate to the Premier League, he will quite rightly feel more confident now. He doesn’t owe us anything, he may prefer a club with fewer financial constraints.

RDZ knows the way of the club now, if he is genuinely willing/able to sign up to “the Brighton way” then absolutely sign him up for the long term. I wonder if the fact that a new deal with release clause hasn’t been agreed suggests that there’s an element of both club and coach still sizing each other up.

My personal guess is that this summer will be instructive in terms of who comes in, who goes out, and how RDZ reacts to both. I suspect that if next season starts well, and RDZ is happy, we’ll see a long-term extension agreed.

I’ve no information, the above is all guesswork on my part, and we all know how opinions are like arseholes…

Strangely, I read this thread whilst listening to stories about Brian Clough. I hope RDZ stays as long but I doubt we will hear similar stories about him. My 2 favourites so far are:
Steve Hodge substituted in the FA Cup 3rd round 3rd replay against that lot up the road and no-one is brought on to replace him with no explanation from Clough at the time. Forest won 3-0 and the next day Clough calls Harry Hodge over and says "about yesterday, you know how I hate Palace and how dirty they are. We were winning and I just thought that playing with 10 men would take the piss out of them, so it's no reflection on you"
Mark Crossley had played 3 games for the club and done very well. Clough tells him after the 3rd game, "Oi shithouse, meet me at my house tomorrow (Sunday) at 9am. Crossley turns up and Clough announces that his son Simon's team are short of a goalie so says that Crossley is going to play for them. So Crossley turns out for this team playing in the Derbyshire Sunday League division 5 on a pitch covered in dog shit and glass, Archie Gemmill of all people is there as a linesman, the team gets fined £50 for playing a ringer and Clough takes the £50 out of Crossley's wages! A lesson in how to keep a player grounded, which Crossley hated at the time but now realises what good it did him.
Anyway I digress, carry on.

I prefer threads like this about our decent new manager who’s barely been here 5 mins than the constant bricking it ones on when he’s leaving - fair play 👍

I like his reply when the physio told him a player was so concussed he didn't know who he was. "Well tell him he's Pele and to bloody get on with it".

I love RDZ and love what he's doing with the team. (For the record I was one of the Potter 'doubters')

I'd love RDZ to stay here for the long term and I think he genuinely seems content enough for the time being.

I do see a little hot-headedness in him though, almost Poyet-esque, albeit less gobby, and wonder how he'll take the news that we won't be signing a £??M striker in the summer and that Caicedo's replacement is likely Gilmour. Unless we show a forward progression in the squad I have doubts he'll commit to staying around for too long. He strikes as the kind of guy that will take us as far as he feels he can before seeking a new challenge.

With that said, I trust in how TB is building us up and should the unthinkable happen and RDZ goes, I wholeheartedly believe whoever comes in next will soon help us move on from RDZ when we're eight points clear at the top. (Semi joking.)
