[Brighton] Levi Colwill *Signed on Season-Long Loan 05/08/2022*

You could say the same about Conor Gallagher before he joined Palace . Signed a New 5 year contract, mixed but positive spells with Charlton, West Brom, and Swansea - turns up at Palace , is their POTS and earns an England debut. Or someone called Fikayo Tomori - another Chelsea CB loaned to Derby when he was 20 - and another POTS…and so on

All great examples, but I’m sure we could drum up a fair duffers list too!

Let's hope young Colwill's another great example then - we can use him for a season and give him back. If he ain't that good - we can give him back. It's a no-lose, no-lose situation.

Not convinced by this at all.

If I compare this to a Lamptey type arrival, who was so determined to prove himself he literally blew his hamstrings with some of the best, frankly incendiary, performances I’ve witnessed... this one feels a bit meh... he’s just signed a long, long term contract with his parent club, he’s been told he’s already brilliant, worth in excess of 20 million... and his claim to fame ? An own goal in the championship playoffs...

I’m just thinking he’s not got too many reasons to really ‘want’ it... I’m don’t envisage total commitment nor any desire to prove himself when he’s been told he’s already made it and (via his contract) is virtually set up until his mid 20s already...

For all of these reasons, I foresee less than 10 starts and not much to write home about.

Thank God it’s only a loan.

I'm surprised you care. You never seem to have anything positive to say about the Albion.

Lol, that’s right I ‘never’ say anything positive about the Albion.

Whilst that’s not true, just don’t ask me what I think of Steve Earle - I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Oh well.

For anyone interested I’ve heard why this loan only came about, Colwill was a player we had interest in before the Cucurella deal. On the day Albion made the club statement a deal couldn’t be done as we wanted Colwill for £12m plus £50m for Cucurella. Because Chelsea stalled on this Albion asked for another £12m for Cucurella which they agreed to the following day. They agreed to loan Colwill for nothing as part of the deal to get Cucurella.

That sounds plausible. A way of dealing with the left-back problem which is just for a year if it doesn’t work out or isn’t needed.

And if he’s any good, we can do the Ben White/Bielsa/Leeds thing……. Potter made him the player he is! Which he could well do.

There's always a risk that a loan player from a wealthier club sees himself as being a bit above the club he has joined. In this case he clearly applied himself very assiduously at Huddersfield and I'm sure we researched the player thoroughly before committing + I trust GP to get the best from him. I'm relaxed about this and look forward to seeing him play.

Nice interview with Levi via the club website - comes across very well and pretty humble ... pleasantly surprised tbh, nice that him and Lamptey have an obvious friendship too.

Now the proof will be in the pudding, but I am quite prepared to say I might have been a bit too harsh in my assessment earlier... after all it’s not his fault the crazy money in the game tells us he’s worth 20 million + etc.

Yes, I’d say if he’s prepared to work and try and all of those basics and he’s got some talent, his loan could be a decent platform for him.

Game time might be ltd though, but time will tell.

Also interesting to hear that He was asking Lamptey questions about the club back in March. So he must have been on our radar for a long time

Just to be pedantic, the proof will be in the eating, not in the pudding.

We bought MC and he was an influential impact for a year and a very big part of our achievement last season…an undeniable success, and then we move on. LC could be the same, we just don’t directly profit financially from him moving on but we could no less benefit from him being here a year by finishing in the top 10 again, for a second year in a row, which should realistically be our target. One thing is for certain in my mind, we certainly don’t lose anything by no doubt taking him on a free loan, and who knows we may have agreed that should he prove worth it Chelsea will honour the 20m asking price.

Sorry Kosh, that was an uncharacteristically personal reply. Then you flummoxed me by poking at Steve Earle with the lyric from my ringtone. A bit spooky. We may have more in common than I thought!

As for Steve Earle, I often say it would be weird if we all like the same music. But surely :

He does seem a very level headed young man. I saw a video of him speaking just before the end of last season and he was very respectful of Huddersfield and their fans were very positive about his ability and attitude.
I think we have a good one, albeit only for a season.

I bumped into Levi tonight and had a chat with him in the tea queue at the pre-season game between Sholing and Bognor (he's a Southampton lad and his uncle was playing for Sholing).
He said how brilliant it is to be at Brighton and it took very little time to decide to join the Albion once he'd spoken to Graham Potter. A really nice well spoken young man.

No loan fee perhaps, but we will be paying his wages, so not entirely free. I wouldn’t have thought these were prohibitive, hence the deal. It’s probably best to accept now though that this is only for one year. If he doesn’t have a good one he returns to his parent club and they find him a new one. If he does well then Chelsea welcome him back just like we did with Ben White after his successful loan spell at Leeds.

I read yesterday that we're paying 60% of his wages. Not sure where I saw that though.

The loan gives further time for JP Van Hecke to develop and possibly become a first teamer next season plus also bed in a left wing back.
I can see Clarke being sold in this window.
Colwill is a short term fix for the Cucurella departure which wasn’t expected/ planned.
He does seem a very level headed young man and seems to be enjoying his time here so far.
A great introduction to life as a Premier League player on Sunday with his last 2/3 minute cameo.

Good to hear. Yes he's another Hampshire lad Chelsea hoovered up, they get most of the seriously talented youngsters round here.

Finished 1.1 didn't it? What was the game like?

Sholing are a decent team, really well run community club too. Have had some good players over the years as they used to be the football team for Vosper Thornycroft ship builders before they merged with/sold out to BAE. I had a spell playing for them about 23 years ago when they were VT!

Will he be fit for Saturday?
