From my limited experience of using a dreadmill, it can be easier, purely because of the reasons you mention. But, to me at least, it is SO DULL, that I end up cutting runs short because I can't be arsed with it. Plus the monotony of being in the same spot (even though you can obvs change speed, elevation, etc), bounce, noise and pretty much everything else about them means I never go near the damn things these days!

Yes that is very true, it is very very dull. I have taken to putting some tape over the distance and time displays so I dont just stand there watching it tick up. It's certainly not an option for long runs but when I only have 20 mins before work or whatever it seems to be ok.

Question: how much easier is running on the treadmill vs running outside?

During the heatwave I got used to running in the gym in my block of flats as it had aircon and I quite enjoyed it given you can pretty much set the pace and just run with it. However I dont want to lull myself into a false sense of security.

I've seen a 1% incline as a suggestion to account for lack of headwind and road resistance.
During a bad winter I spent a lot of time on a treadmill and I noticed a gradual change in my stride pattern/foot plant etc. I think my body learnt that the longer both my feet were off the belt, the easier it was!

Well done jimmygull. Incredible improvement. I've edited the table above and you are now 3rd (bit of detective work by myself to get your AG). The gap between us, at 0.5%, will be my target for August!

Thanks Knocky and Bad Ash. Yes, pretty pleased with progress, started the year with an aim of getting Sub 20 at 5k! Combo of regular Park Runs, Run Club and less booze has kept me improving. Although, I definitely seem to have peaked at 5k, scratching away at the odd second now and matched my PB at Hove Prom week before last!

I seem to have slipped a place for some reason in this latest version. My current SB is 22:28 and 75.37%, from Preston Park on 25 June

I did 25k on the treadmill last night. Boy that was dull. The aircon was handy though!

Edited you in table above. Well spotted, I'd not written that page number in my diary.
There are 5 of us on 75%. I will endeavour to join the 76%.

Update. Having whinged about missing selection for the England very old gits 10k team by 1 second, it appears I was wrong. They select on gun time and thus I have been selected ( Chester 10k, 2023).

🇬🇧 or 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿?
Either way NSC are honoured to have an International at the top of their table. Gritted teeth....

What a relief! I’ve been reading this thread for years feeling like a proper slow Old Git and it turns out I’m benchmarking myself against England Internationals!
